1(No Transcript)
2DoD RFID Use Here and Abroad
- Kathy Smith
- DoD Supply Chain Integration
3 The RFID Vision
- Implement knowledge-enabled logistics through
fully automated visibility and management of
assets in support of the warfighter
4RFID Policy Scope and Standards
- Active RFID Consolidated Shipments (freight
containers, air pallets) - 433 Mhz readers tags
- DoD tag data formats
- Suppliers rarely obligated to apply tags
- No wide scale commercial use
- Passive RFID Shipments of boxes and warehouse
pallets - UHF EPCGlobal Gen 2 (ISO 18000-6c) readers tags
- EPC tag data formats (includes DoD tag data
construct) - Suppliers contractually obligated to tag
- Wide scale commercial implementations
5Interoperability with Coalition Partners using
Active RFID
- Global In-Transit Visibility (ITV) Initiative
- Collaborative effort with partner nations
- Creates a globally connected network, enabled by
RFID and bar codes using each individual nations
computer infrastructure and asset tracking
systems. - Project ties previously disparate and closed ITV
systems to one another, and maximize the
capabilities of each partner nations ITV systems
in order to achieve global visibility of each
nations own consignments.
6Current National As-Is ITV Architecture
- Each Nation uses a different ITV system.
- None of the Nations ITV systems currently
exchange information.
7Global ITV Capability To-Be Architecture
Partner Nations route ITV data to owning nations
servers.
Country A
Partner Nations Servers
Country B
Country C
Country D
Partner Nations ITV Data Capture Sites
As sustainment passes ITV data capture sites
belonging to partner nations, nations will
capture ITV data and route it to owning nation.
8Global ITV Capability Partners
- 25 Nations and one Treaty Organization as of 1
March 06 Australia, Austria, Bulgaria, Canada,
Croatia, Denmark, Estonia, Ecuador, Finland,
France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Japan, South
Korea, Mexico, NATO, Netherlands, New Zealand,
Romania, Singapore, Slovakia, Sweden,
Switzerland, United Kingdom, United States.
9Interoperability with DoD Suppliers using
Passive RFID
- DoD adopted EPCglobal standards for passive RFID
- Leverages the marketplace
- Consistent standard in use by most major
retailers - Puts Government and Commercial sectors on same
standard
10Interoperability is Key To DoD Success
- DoD is committed to open standards which allow
for universal data interoperability - Using Active RFID ISO standard for
interoperability with our coalition partners - Using EPCglobal passive RFID standards for
interoperability with our DoD suppliers - Working spectrum approvals through appropriate
military offices
