Skittles
  • By Molly Conner, Cole McCallum Nicole Smathers

2
How to Play
  • Skittles is a game where players take turns
throwing wooden balls down a lane and at the end
of the lane there are several wooden skittles
(pins). The purpose was to try and knock the
    skittles over.

3
How to Play
  • The alley is 24 feet long and there are 9
skittles arranged in a square at the end of the
    long alley.
  • Each turn starts out with all of the skittles
standing and each player gets 3 throws down the
    alley.
  • The game is very similar to the common day sport
    of bowling.
  • Ones maximum score in a single turn of skittles
    is 27.

4
How to Play
  • The object (wooden ball) thrown down the alley is
    called the cheese.
  • There are many different versions of skittles
that have evolved over the years, however, the
most common version of play is West Country
    Skittles.

This is a common at-home table set that can be
found in homes today. The tabletop version allows
for this game to be played at home.

Where When
  • The game of skittles can be traced back to
    ancient Egypt and beyond.
  • It came about in the 3rd or 4th century when the
monks played a game with a kegel that was used as
a club carried for self defense. In the game, the
kegel represented a sin or temptation and the
monks would throw stones at it until it was
    knocked over.

6
Where Was Skittles Played?
  • The intense game of skittles was originally
played outdoors in a garden. In 1933, Bernard
Levy brought the game indoors when he ordered a
specially constructed basement room in the cellar
of the Freemasons Arms, which is a
    pub/restaurant in London.

Development of Skittles
  • Modern table-top games have mostly eliminated
    actual skittles alleys.
  • Bowling alleys have for the most part, replaced
    the game of skittles.
  • There are many websites that provide the supplies
and equipment to build your own skittles alley or
    purchase a table-top model.

Development of Skittles
  • Towards the end of the 19th century the game of
skittles was gaining popularity and club
    constitutions were made.
  • Soon after the constitutions were drafted the
    Amateur Skittles Association was formed.
  • Skittles was particularly popular in between
World War I and World War II because large
numbers of clubs were playing in competitions.
