  • ???

4
Overview
  • Roadmap covers 4 general areas
  • Data storage
  • Data backup
  • Collaborative space
  • Education and policy

5
Roadmap Recommendations
  • Offer tiers of service one size does not fit
    all
  • Move towards some level of centralization and
    consolidation
  • Incorporate storage infrastructure requirements
    into future campus infrastructure planning
  • Explore outsourcing, but cautiously

6
Goals Data Storage
  • Easy-to-use
  • Easy-to-access
  • Cost-effective
  • Must address business needs
  • Must provide appropriate levels of security and
    privacy
  • Storage should appear as a unified pool to
    end-users

7
Goals Data Backups
  • Easy-to-use
  • Cost-effective
  • Appropriate for various classes of data and
    different business requirements
  • Backups is considered the most critical area of
    the four in this roadmap

8
Goals Collaborative Space
  • Storage spaces should support collaboration
  • Collaboration occurs between campus entities as
well as between campus and non-campus entities

9
Goals Education and Policy
  • Provide education to facilitate communication and
understanding of storage, backup concepts to both
    technical personnel and non-technical
    decision-makers
  • Encourage development of policies and best
    practices for storage, backups

10
Directions Data Storage
  • Storage that is accessible from anywhere,
    supports multiple platforms, easy-to-use for
    end-users
  • Implement improvements to CITES NetFiles
    reasonably achievable in 1-2 years
  • Centralized NAS-like service to provide storage
    to depts/units
  • Achievable in 1-3 years, given sufficient
    resources
  • Storage appropriate for compliance with
    applicable rules and regulations
  • Build onto existing and future storage services
  • Storage that appears to end-users as a unified
    pool of storage
  • Consider when planning future services and
    upgrades to existing services
  • Institutional repository that is functionally
    integrated with campus-wide storage services
  • Consider when planning services

11
Directions Data Backups
  • Remote Storage for both remote replication and
    disk-based backups
  • Reasonably achievable in 1-2 years
  • Enterprise quality, centralized data backup
services at college and/or campus level
  • Form working groups to develop recommendations
and plans for implementation (1-2 years?)

12
Directions Collaborative Space
  • Storage space/services that facilitate
collaboration among and between campus and
    non-campus entities
  • Consider when building storage services
  • Need appropriate authn/authz (identity and
    access management)
  • Need flexibility to create groups from different
    combinations of roles/identities (group
    management)
  • Need access by non-campus entities (federation
    and guest services)

13
Directions Education Policy
  • Education should be provided to both technical
    and non-technical personnel
  • Should occur over next 2 years, including common
    terminology and communicating to non-technical
    decision-makers
  • Best practices and policies for storage, backups
  • Begin forming working groups over the next year
