eMentalHealth.ca Overview for Potential Partner
Agencies
2
The Problem
3
Mental health problems are
  • A massive burden
  • Directly related to
  • 75 of short term disability claims
  • 79 of long-term disability claims
  • gt 3B direct economic costs to employers
  • Staying _at_ Work Survey (Sept 2005)
    http//www.watsonwyatt.com/canada

4
The human cost?
  • Immeasurable.

5
To get help you need to know where to go
  • Unfortunately, the average person doesnt know
    where to go
  • Stigma makes it even harder to ask where to go
  • And even if they ask someone (even their family
physician), there is no guarantee that person
    knows where to go either!

6
The Solution (Where Your Agency Can Play a Key
Role!)
7
The Solution eMentalHealth.ca
  • A platform that lets you know
  • Where to go for help in your local area (i.e.
    mental health resources)
  • When mental health events are happening (events
    calendar)
  • What (i.e. plans are underway to have mental
    health information)

20
So what is our Secret?
21
Secret 1 We Use Open Source Software
What is Open Source software?
22
Open Source is Free
  • Open Source is a free platform that allows you to
develop software that is not owned by any company
  • Thus, we can share it without additional,
    commercial licensing cost!

23
We Use Open Source Software
  • As opposed to traditional, expensive, commercial,
    proprietary software
  • Which you cannot give away freely or share freely
with others because that would be piracy

24
eMH as a Bookshelf
  • eMH is a like free bookshelf with shelves for
Ontario and the rest of Canada
  • So far, it has books on the Ontario shelves, and
a small number of books on all the other
    provincial shelves
  • We are looking for communities to fill all the
    shelves

25
Secret 2 Distributed Content Management
  • Traditional databases require large commitment of
    IT and human resources

26
Secret 2 Distributed Content Management
  • Advances in technology allow for Distributed
    Content Management
  • Database management is shared at all levels with
    the help of
  • eMH Head office
  • Local partners in each of the local communities
  • Website visitors

27
Does Distributed Content Management Work?
  • Worlds largest encyclopedia is built entirely by
    distributed content management
  • Acknowledged by even major medical journals as
    being a valid, accurate resource

28
How It Works for eMH
? Community Database Created
? Anyone submits new info, or suggests edit
?
? DatabaseUpdated!
?eMH editors/partners approve, reject or edit
submission
29
Summary of Our Secret
  • Databases are expensive
  • Thus we use Open Source
  • Databases require excessive effort to maintain
  • Thus we use Distributed Content Management

30
Expansion Across Canada
  • Our database has capacity for every community in
    Canada
  • But we need local partners!

30
31
Who has funded us to date?
  • Startup grants from
  • Community Foundation Ottawa (for Resource
    Directory)
  • Community Project Ottawa (for Events Calendar)
  • Currently time-limited funding from
  • Provincial Centre of Excellence for Child and
    Youth Mental Health
  • CHEO Psychiatry Associates

32
Testimonials
  • it is difficult for parents to access what
mental health services are available A good
start has been made through their e-mental
    health website www.ementalhealth.ca. It is
recommended that this Canadian best practice be
funded to expand this portal service across
    Canada.

Leitch, K., (2008). Reaching for the Top A
Report by the Advisor on Healthy Children and
Canada's Youth
33
Local Partners Wanted!
34
Would you be interested in
  • Wouldnt it be great if your community could have
free and accessible access to information about
  • Mental Health Resources
  • Community Mental Health Events
  • Mental Health Topics and Conditions
  • Mental Health News
  • Wouldnt it be even better if your organization
could be the one doing this?
  • If so, then read on

35
What about 211?
36
Complements Other Databases such as 211
  • One size does not fit all
  • It is impossible for one database alone to meet
    everyones needs
  • There will always need to be general and
    specialized databases

General
Specialized
37
How eMH complements 211
  • Even with 211 or local Blue Books
  • Mental health service providers still make their
    own specialized lists
  • Even with eMH
  • Sub-specialized mental health groups still make
    their own lists
  • Autism Lists
  • ADHD Lists, etc

38
Summary
39
Summary
  • eMH helps Canadians get connected to mental
    health information and resources
  • Our innovative, open source and distributed
content management system means it can be
inexpensively deployed to communities across the
    country
  • Partnership with eMentalHealth is an easy way to
help your community and bring prestige and glory
    to your organization

40
