2Maybe youve heard some rumors about Wal-Mart.
Lets look at the past few years and figure out
the deatails...
3WAL-MART in the Past
- In 2001-There was a lot of Wal-Mart employees
earning far below the poverty line. The most
common job earned 8.23 an hour for annual wages
of 13,861, while the US poverty line for a
family of three is 14,630.
- In 2004- Wal-Mart made a "lock-in" policy at some
of its Wal-Mart stores. They lock their doors at
night so that no one can enter or leave the
building, leaving workers inside trapped. Some
workers had been threatened to be fired if they
ever left through the fire escape. They were
supposed to wait for a manager to unlock doors to
allow employees to escape in an emergency.
4In 2005-The average two-person family needed
27,948 to meet basic needs Wal-Mart claimed that
its average associate earned 9.68 an hour. That
would make the average associates wages 17,114.
- February 15 200 5-The U.S. Department of Labor
has fined Wal-Mart 135,540 for violating the
youth employment provisions for allowing teenage
workers to operate hazardous equipment.
- In the past year-More than 70 of goods on
Wal-Mart's shelves come from China. More than 25
dangerous products from China have been pulled
from Wal-Mart's shelves. There is a great range
in these products, such as baby bibs, dog
biscuits, and childrens toys.

- Wal-Mart reports that it purchased 18 billion
of goods from China in 2004. -Wal-Mart was
responsible for about 1/10th of the U.S. trade
deficit with China in 2005.
- If Wal-Mart were an individual economy, it
would rank as China's eighth-biggest trading
partner, ahead of Russia, Australia and Canada.
- Wal-Mart hurts other businesses when it comes
to town. In Maine, businesses lost over 10 of
their market in 80 of the towns where Wal-Mart
opened stores.
- Wage increases would cost Wal-Mart relatively
little
6Wal-Mart has agreed to the following actions as
part of the compliance agreement
Wal-Mart reports that it purchased 18 billion of

One week of time records from 25,000 employees in
July 2000 found 1,371 instances of minors working
too late, during school hours, or for too many
hours in a day. There were 60,767 missed breaks
and 15,705 lost meal times.
Wal-Mart agreed to pay 135,540 to settle child
labor violation charges in January 2005 for
allegedly breaking child labor laws in 24
incidents.
Wal-Mart has also been fined 205,650 for 1,436
violations of child labor laws in Maine for the
period 1995 to 1998.
