Title: Battle of the Books

1
Battle of the Books
  • Start your engines!

This power point was originally
created by Lucy Drenka, a librarian in Carroll
ISD, who introduced me to
Battle of the Books. I have altered this power
point and the reading program to
fit to the needs of my students, and you are
welcome to do the same.
2
Under the hood
  • You will be placed on a team with a captain. You
will become the expert on 2 books from the list
    of 5 Battle books.
  • For each of those two books, you will write a
summary and a detail question over each chapter.
These will be for reading grades.
  • Read all 5 books to earn yourself a spot in the
winners circle at the end! (You only have to
write questions for the extra books!)

3
Team Sponsors
  • As a team, you will choose a team name. Your
team will make a banner to represent your team in
the battles. You may also dress up and bring
props to add some team spirit. Here are just a
few examples of names in the past
  • Saturday Knight Fever
  • Battling Book Worms
  • Chapter Champs

What is a Battle?
  • Here is how the actual battles work
  • For each book, your team will have 10 seconds to
answer a question correctly and earn 3 points.
This is your teams GIVEN question.
  • If your team answers incorrectly, or does not
answer within 10 seconds you dont lose any
points, but a bell will sound and another team
    may answer for 1 point.

6
Rev those engines
  • The competition continues with a round of POP-UP
questions. The first team that signals in with
their remote gets to answer the question. If
your team gets it correct, you earn 2 points.
HOWEVER If your team answers incorrectly, you
    will lose 2 points.

7
In the pit.
  • Remember the team that works together and cheers
each other on toward the finish has a better
    chance of being winners!
  • TEAMWORK!!
  • Everyone on the team is very important!

8
First Lap
  • We will visit the library for your first round of
Class Battles where you will compete against the
other teams in your reading class.
  • Since this is the first battle, you will learn
the strengths and weaknesses of your team and
hopefully make a plan to do even better in the
next battle! You will probably see which books
you need to review the most before the next
    round!

9
Second Lap
  • Then we will visit the library and have a second
    round of Class Battles!
  • Hopefully every team is prepared to answer
questions about the books because they will be
    more difficult.
  • We will add the scores from Class Battles round 1
and 2 to see which team goes on to represent your
    class in the Team Battle.

10
Third Lap
  • We will visit the cafeteria for the third round
of battle (Team Battle) between the winners of
each class on your 6th grade team.
  • The Champs and Runner-ups (top two teams with the
highest scores) from 6-1 and 6-2 will go on to
    compete in the Final Battle!
  • Competition is getting tougher, and so are the
    questions. Know those books!!

11
Victory Lap!
  • The grandstands are packed! Everyone (the entire
6th grade) is in the cafeteria cheering the 6-1
and 6-2 Team Champs and Runner-ups on to victory
    during the Final Battle!

12
The Winners Circle
  • What is the Winners Circle?
  • Answer The After-Battle Party
  • (that you get out of class to go to)
  • Who goes to it?
  • Answer 6-1 and 6-2 Team Champs,
  • Runner-ups, and anyone who read
  • all 5 books!

13
Other Awards Given
  • We will also be observing from the very beginning
until the very end of this exciting program to
see who will earn the following
  • Top-Reading Class the class that has the
    highest average of books read
  • Spirit Awards teams that show great attitudes,
teamwork, creativity w/ costume props, etc.
  • Outstanding Students the boy and girl from
6-1 and 6-2 that seem to give 110 in the areas
    of attitude, teamwork, and effort
