China and Modernization
  • Chapter 19 sec 3

2
The Republic of China
  • China was not respected after WWI. At the treaty
of Versailles Japan was given control of the
Sandong Peninsula. After WWI China was torn apart
by internal division and foreign powers took
advantage of their weakness. The leader Sun
Yat-sen of China declared China a republic and he
wanted a democratic society. Two months after
taking power Yuan Shigai took control of China
and made it a dictatorship. Yuan died soon later
and China fell into chaos. Sun Yat-sen returned
in 1917 and regained control and rebuilt the
Guomindang party. The Soviet Union also helped.
After Sun died ChiangKai-shek took power and est.
    a new Gov. in Nanjing.

Communist
  • There were three groups warlords and communists
and democratics. Chiang Kai-shek went against the
warlords with the help of the communist soldiers.
In 1927 the communist tried to take over Chaings
party and Chaing went against the communist.
Chaing killed tens of thousands of communists. The
communist regrouped in the mountains with the
help of Mao Zedong. The Communist gathered
strength among the peasants of China until they
became 30,000 strong. Mao tried to out smart the
    Guomindang (Chaing Kai-shek), but became
surrounded by 1 million soldiers. Mao retreated
    with 100,000 soldiers.

4
The Long March and the threat from Japan
  • Mao Zedong went on the retreat for 6,000
miles(known as the long march). The average was
about 16 miles a day. Thousands of soldiers froze
or starved or died in battle. Of the 100,000 only
    8,000 survived.
  • While Mao and Chiang battled each other the
    Japanese conquered Northeastern China
(Manchuria). Mao offered assistance to stop the
    Japanese. Chiang refused. Manchurian Forces
kidnapped Chiang and told him to stop his
fighting with the Communist. Mao and Chiangs
unity could not stop the Japanese. Chiang and Mao
withdrew to the interior of the country but
before they could strike at the Japanese the
    world was at war.
