Hot Excel Projects for Elementary Classroom
2
This session explained and demonstrated how to
infuse Bloom's Taxonomy with MS Excel. The
presenters distributed a higher-order thinking
skills (HOTS) tool which they suggested keeping
posted on or near the teacher's workstation so as
to have easy access to HOTS type questions during
the lesson. We were shown several examples of
the data collection projects they created
strictly for the purpose of using MS
Excel--favorite weather conditions, weather
comparisons, favorite french fry producer,
holidays). Their ideas were easy to use and
implement without needing a lot of preparation
work. To ease the burden on teachers, templates
could be created so teachers can have access to a
variety of project ideas. The samples they
demonstrated were for the elementary grade
levels. After collecting the data in the form of
student votes, the teacher shows the graphic
representation from the data. Then, they
explained how any data collection lesson can
easily involve asking HOTS questions to our
students (i.e., How would our graph change if we
added _____? What if we lived in ______, would
our graph look the same? etc.) For the lower
grade levels, you could use pictures to represent
the graph charts for better understanding.
