LoTiStrategies to Increase Learning Through the
Use of Technology

2
The Issue
  • High cost of technology investments
  • Raised expectations of technology use
  • Confusion of what technology integration means in
    the 21st Century Classroom

3
The Goal
  • Enhance the effectiveness of instruction by using
    technology
  • Define a common language for discussing and
assessing technology usage in the classroom.
  • Data driven professional development to address
technology us in the teaching process

4
The Goal - continued
  • Renew/stimulate teacher interest in using
    technology
  • Recognize and leverage students natural interest
in using technology to learn Technology Natives

5
The Solution
  • LoTi Levels of Technology implementation
  • Seven-level framework developed by Dr. Chris
    Moersch
  • Non-use No technology use
  • Awareness Teacher use limited student use with
little or no relevance to the curriculum
  • Exploration Students use technology to
    demonstrate their content understanding

6
The Solution - continued
  • Infusion Students use technology to apply their
    content understanding
  • Integration Students use technology to apply
their content understanding to the real-world
  • Expansion Students use technologies to apply
and extend their content understanding beyond the
    classroom to real-world situations
  • Refinement Students take the learning beyond
the classroom to solve authentic problems no
    limits to technology resources

7
The Approach
  • Educating principals and curriculum
administrators in the LoTi philosophy of enhanced
    lesson design and instruction
  • Superintendents support and leadership
  • Training leaders
  • Administrator Institute (administrative support)
  • LoTi Mentor Certification (campus support)

8
The Approach - continued
  • Campus and teacher buy-in
  • LoTi project schools
  • Teacher training
  • DETAILS questionnaire
  • Evaluate data to identify areas of need
  • Attend training sessions focused on LoTi
  • Focus on combining technology with higher-order
    thinking
  • Classroom observations
  • Monitor progress and sustain program

9
The LoTi Project
In 1994, Dr. Chris Moersch developed the Levels
of Technology Implementation (LoTi) scale in an
effort to accurately measure authentic classroom
technology use.
10
The LoTi Project
A framework that focuses on the use of technology
as an interactive learning medium a methodology
to promote systemic change in instructional
technology use.

Sniff Test
  • Is the teacher the only one allowed on the
    computer?
  • Is technology being used by students as a part of
    the learning experience?
  • Is there evidence of HOT by students tied to
    content?
  • Are students applying learning to solve
real-world problem/situation or resolve an issue?
  • Is the lesson student centered? (2 out of 3
    content, process or product)
  • Are the students consumed by learning?
  • Is there 2-way collaboration with outside expert?
  • Is there unlimited student access to technology
    during the school day?
