The background
  • School Sport Partnerships invited to join Youth
    Sport Trust Disability Gifted and Talented
    initiative.
  • 1000- ID 10 young people, support them with
    provision of sport, run 3 ID days per year.
  • Identification Days now seem to be the main
    focus.

How we organised it.
  • City wide project rather than individual School
    Sport Partnerships.
  • Co-ordinating group- Disability Officer, 2 SSCOs
    and 1 PDM.
  • Initial 1 day pilot June 07.
  • This school year 1 generic ID day, 1 Athletics
    ID/Development day, 1 Swimming ID day.

Who came?
  • Schools found it difficult to know who to send to
    the events- hence the reason for the events!
  • Any disabled young person with an interest or
    flair for sport.
  • Initiative focuses on physical and sensory
    impairment. We invited schools to bring up to 2
    young people with learning disabilities.

Who came?
  • Pilot event- June 2007- 37 young people.
  • Generic ID day November 2007- 74 young people
  • 56 from mainstream schools.
  • Athletics ID event- March 17th 2008
  • Swimming event June 2008.

Some of the difficulties
  • The actual assessment! Are they Gifted or
    Talented?
  • The ID assessment card.
  • How to structure the day?
  • Impairment groups or ability groups?
  • Which activities to use to allow pupils to show
    their skills?
  • Skill based- rackets, athletics, multi skill,
    invasion games. Partly based on availability of
    coaching staff.

Some of the positives
  • Bringing disabled young people together to
    participate in sport who dont always get the
    same chances as others.
  • Enthusing young people in sport.
  • Promoting other sporting opportunities to a keen
    crowd.
  • Highlighting ability and disability sport to
    teaching staff and SSCOs.

The next event Athletics based.
  • Similar format to previous events.
  • Activities specifically based on athletics.
  • IDing opportunity.
  • Chance for athletes to have a go at athletics
    events.
  • Promote attendance at FDSO regional competition
    structure to staff and pupils.
  • Promote community athletics club.
