What is GPS?

• GPS is a global positioning system.
• In the 1980s the government made the system
  available for the public to use.
• GPS can be used in everyday life for things like
  mapping, surveying, fishing, or shipping.
• GPS is used by companies worldwide

History of GPS

• Created by the U.S. military
• Funded and controlled by the American Department
  of Defense
• 1973 Decision to develop a satellite navigation
  system
• 1983 Open for civilian use
• 1993 Authorize the world wide civilian use free
  of charge

How GPS works?

• Network of 24 satellites
• Circle the earth twice a day in a particular
  orbit
• Process Satellites transmit the signal
  information to the GPS receiver. The receiver
  compares the time a signal was sent out by a
  satellite with the time it was received. That
  time difference informs the receiver how far away
  the satellite is. After distance measurements
  from a few more satellites, the receiver can
  establish the users exact location.

Advantages and Disadvantages of GPS

• Advantages
• Accurate (within 5 to 15m on average)
• Availability (24 hours per day)
• Signal can be used by anyone for no fee
• Works in most all weather

• Disadvantages
• Not 100 accurate
• Problems properly working in certain weather
  conditions

  coordinates.
• Search for hidden envelope to find a clue and
  coordinates for next location.
• Answer clues to determine the final set of
  coordinates (you will need your textbook).
