2How does SERA score Hare Scrambles?
Answer SERA is now using RFID (Radio Frequency
Identification). The system is custom software
run on a PC that reads transponder information
when the rider enters the scoring tent. The PC
turns the off the RED stop light and turns on the
GREEN light for 0.8 seconds. The PC also
calculates the riders position in the class and
displays the riders number and position on a
sign.

4What is a transponder?
Simple Answer The electronic doo-hickey that
carries the riders number. It looks like a
plastic cigar case. Better Answer A transponder
is an electronic device that carries a number.
We use the number to identify the rider. The
transponder does not have a battery. When the
rider enters the antenna RF field the transponder
charges up and sends the number internal to the
transponder to the PC. The transponder must be
within the RF field for 0.1 seconds. It then can
send the number to the RFID reader. This all
takes about 0.2 seconds. The computer then
processes the data and turns the light green and
puts the rider number and position within his
class on the sign.
5How do I carry a transponder?
The best place to carry the transponder is on the
front/center of your chest protector. The
transponder must not be covered by any metal.
You may cover the transpoder with tape, cloth or
other non-metallic items. The suggested method to
attach the transponder to the chest protector is
with zip ties. The scoring team can then still
read your number in case the transponder
fails. Please put your transponder number on
your left number plate as a minimum. It is
suggested that you place the number on all number
plates. SERA will still issue a bar coded number
for the left front of your helmet. The system
has the capability to read bar codes,
transponders and manual entry.
6How much does the transponder cost?
Answer The transponder cost the rider 15. If
you do not wish to keep the transponder, then
return it to the sign up area after the race and
you will receive 10. The transponder can be
reprogrammed at any time. If you change classes
then the transponder must be reprogrammed for
your new class. The transponder does not wear
out. You only need to buy one.
