ViDeNet and theGlobal Dialing Scheme
  • Egon Verharen

TNC2004 H.323 Training June 11, 2004 Rhodes,
Greece
2
ViDeNet
  • ViDeNet
  • A ViDe Project
  • A global, virtual network providing video and
    voice-over-IP to advanced networking communities
  • An architecture that has been adopted for use by
    the Internet2 Commons
  • An exploration of directory services for
    videoconferencing through ViDe's participation in
    the Internet2 VidMid program

3
Benefits of ViDeNet
  • Use of the Global Dialing Scheme
  • A searchable directory
  • User-managed accounts
  • Zone management tools for creating a customized
    portal
  • A zone administrator listserv
  • Developing initiatives such as emergency
    communications

4
ViDeNet Zones
  • International
  • Universities
  • Educational institutes
  • Research institutes
  • Research and Educational Networks
  • Companies
  • Public Zone

189 Zones (05-2004) ! 10000 endpoints And
counting
5
Detailed tool description
  • 1. Any user can put themself in the directory and
manage their own information. They can give their
    endpoints friendly names.
  • 2. Zone administrators can create as many zones
    as they need for themselves.
  • 3. Zone administrators can use the ViDeNet tool
    to manage
  • a. custom web portal for their zone (demo UNC
    zone for fun)
  • b. scratch pad for important info
  • c. routing (i.e. peering into GDS)
  • d. research other zones and zone admins
  • e. listserv for sharing information
  • f. add commObject data (i.e. h.323 address) to
    users.
  • g. review/approve/delete user requests
  • 4. Users may search the H.350 directory.

  • Global Dialing Scheme

9
GDS
  • A numbering plan for global video and voice over
    IP
  • A structure for peering between gatekeepers, such
that any endpoint associated with a ViDeNet zone
may dial an endpoint in any other ViDeNet zone

10
Global Dialing Scheme
  • Principles
  • International, but Freedom of choice for local
    situation
  • E.164/tel.no. integration
  • Implemented by present gatekeeper technology
  • Compatible with existing network (ViDeNet)
  • Governed by ViDes Numerical Address Space
    Management (NASM) working group
  • Proposal
  • by SURFnet, UKERNA, HEAnet, UNC
  • Implemented by ViDeNet, Internet2 and NREN
    services and testbeds

11
Numerical Address Space Management (NASM)
  • Core Dial Plan Management for ViDeNet
  • Manage Root Gatekeeper Hierarchy
  • ViDeNet admissions
  • Root ViDeNet tool administration

12
GDS

13
GDS Number Scheme
  • Each number has four parts
  • International Access Code (IAC) (also called the
world gatekeeper prefix)- defined as 00
  • A Country Code (CC)- follows the ITU
international access code system (1 for the US
  • An Organizational Prefix (OP)- ViDeNet assigned
them some countries use area code/exchange
    prefix
  • An Endpoint Number (EN)- a unique number
(sometimes called H.323 extension) assigned to
each endpoint by each organization (could be a
E164 number or any other unique number)
