3General Goals of Todays Meeting
- Heres a chance to talk with and exchange
information with collaborators. - We have a mix of Geoscientists and IT researchers
that is unique. - Use this chance.
4General Goals of Todays Meeting
- Build common understanding about the current
status of the SCEC/CME project. - Build common understanding of what the project
will produce in the remaining development. - Identify what needs to be done by us to reach a
useful result on this project.
5General Goals of Todays Meeting
- Purpose it not to convince ourselves everything
is great, or that we are on track. - We need accurate assessment of state of project
and problems identified. Proposed solutions are
good, but not necessary at this time.
6SCEC/CME Project Development
- 5 Year funding of 10M or 2M/year distributed to
collaborating organizations including the
following (Organizations alphabetically and
example area of work). - Carnegie Mellon Pathway 2 AWM Development/Data
Representation. - IRIS Metadata Standards/Distributed Access to
Datasets. - SCEC ITR Project Management/System
Integration/Intern Program - SDSU Pathway 2 AWM Development

10SCEC/CME Project Development
- SCEC/CME Release 2 Due June 30 (3 weeks)
- Please contribute your work for integration at
SCEC/USC.
11SCEC/CME Project Development
- SCEC/CME Pathway 2 work plan produced in April
- Task identified and order identified.
- Action items from todays meeting will be
integrated into Plan. - Plan reflects general consensus of what needs to
be done to reach a successful outcome. -
12CME Development Goal
- Conceptual Development Target
- The CME Year 2 system will produce predictive
datasets from Pathway 1 and Pathway 2 that can
be compared to an observed dataset.
13CME Development Goal
- Selected predictive dataset is a ground motion
map (PGV Map, PGD Map, or Spectral Response Map)
of Los Angeles basin for a significant recent
southern California earthquake. - Ground Motion Maps are derivable from Pathway 1
and Pathway 2 and from are available from
observation for a selected few Southern
California earthquakes.
14CME Model Comparison
Example Use AR and AWM models to predict PGV for
Northridge
- Predictive PGV Map from Pathway 1 Attenuation
Relation using SCEC CVM - Predictive PGV Map from Pathway 2 Olsen AWM using
SCEC CVM - Observed PGV TriNet Shakemap.
15CME Additional Comparisons
Other predictive datasets will be produced such
as seismograms although these may not be
available from both pathways.
- Seismograms from Pathway 2 Olsen AWM using SCEC
VM - Seismograms from Pathway 2 Olsen AWM using
Harvard VM - Seismograms from Pathway 2 Day AWM using SCEC
CVM. - Seismograms from TriNet/SCECDC using observations.
