1. Training and Education Activities in JAMSTEC
  • Activities for professionals
  • ?Marine Science education
  • for high school teachers
  • ? Diving training courses
  • for researchers, engineers and rescue
    members
  • ? Training program
  • for Asia-Western pacific Ocean Research
    Network
  • ? Training program for professionals of
  • Oceanographic observation

5
2. The purpose of Training Program for
Asia-Western pacific Ocean Research Network
As a Capacity Building program, the aim of
Training program for Asia-Western pacific Ocean
Research Network is Establishing an
oceanographic observation network in the Asia and
Western Equatorial Pacific.
6
2. The purpose of Training Program for
Asia-Western pacific Ocean Research Network
  • The workshop provides
  • ? training on basic marine scientific and
  • technological knowledge
  • ? handling techniques of ocean observational
  • and analytical equipment
  • ? opportunity of communications
  • among participants

7
2. The purpose of Training Program for
Asia-Western pacific Ocean Research Network
  • Participants would acquire capabilities
  • to forecast marine condition of their countrys
  • surrounding waters.
  • to carry out the first level processing of
    their
  • organizations and/or countrys oceanographic
    data
  • to establish an oceanographic observation
  • network in the Asia and Western Equatorial
    Pacific
  • through human relations developed during the
  • workshop
  • to participate in global scale elucidation and
  • prediction of anomalous climatic change

8
3. The outline of the program
  • Period
  • ?1st January 15 March 9, 2001 (8 weeks)
  • ?2nd November 4 November 30, 2001 (4 weeks)
  • ?3rd (scheduled)
  • October 28 December 8, 2002 (6 weeks)

9
3. The outline of the program
  • Selection of participating country
  • - the countries near to the area where JAMSTEC
carries out oceanographic research and surveys by
research vessels, TRITON buoys and ARGO floats.
  • -the countries located in the area suffering from
    El-Nino, La-nina, and cyclone.

TRITON buoy and research vessel MIRAI
3. The outline of the program
Training workshop focused on ? data handling of
oceanic and atmospheric data available ?
technologies for oceanic and atmospheric
observations, especially on maintaining TRITON
buoy system and equipment on-board the research
vessel Mirai
12
3. The outline of the program
  • Required qualification to participants

?Knowledge of natural science or
technology ?Basic operation of PC ?Either in
occupants of -ocean observation
-fisheries -marine forecasting
-meteorological observation ? younger than around
35 years old
13
3. The outline of the program
  • Participants are requested
  • -to bring their countrys or organizations
    available oceanographic and meteorological data.
  • -to present a brief report on their countrys
ocean observation and related service system.
  • The kind of data which participants brought
  • ----gt sea level, precipitation, fish catch
    yield,etc

4. The result of the training program
  • Participants of the workshop became
  • ? understand the importance of oceanographic
observation due to confirmation of availability
    of participants own data.
  • ? be able to know the oceanic condition of their
own countries by getting and analyzing the data
which JAMSTEC opens on the web-site.
  • ? exchange information about oceanic condition
    using the human relationship.
  • ? Making use of the result of the workshop,
actively execute their job at their own country.

20
5. Future Development
  • To elucidate mechanism of various changes in the
global environment, it is indispensable to make
more wide, dense and precise observation than
    ever.
  • ?
  • to understand the importance of the
    oceanographic observation
  • to make use of the knowledge and the network
built by the capacity building program in
    regional observational activities.
