2
Background
  • The ASCE Aerodynamics Committee of Aerospace
    Division was formed in 1976.
  • It was reconstituted in 2007 as the
Environmental Wind Engineering Committee of the
    new TCWE
  • Technical Council on Wind Engineering.

3
Committees Promotional Role
  • City planners and urban designers need to be
aware of tools and quantitative techniques used
by wind engineers in urban aerodynamics and how
they can benefit from adopting quantitative
techniques in lieu of an intuitive approach.

Booklet
  • Designing tall buildings in the 1970s
presented problems with respect to the simplistic
wind load code of the time.
  • Boundary layer wind tunnels were developed to
provide more detailed information on total winds,
cladding loads, and safety of wind conditions at
    pedestrian level around buildings.

Wind Tunnel Studies
  • Most wind tunnel studies related to a single
building or structure, but some studies
considered broader regions with respect to
airborne pollution or relative wind speeds over
    complex topography.

Computational Fluid Dynamics
  • Rapid increase in computing speed of smaller
computers has made CFD accessible to a much wider
range of people interested in environmental
    aerodynamics.
