Policy 2005 Panel
A Roadmap to Policy Research Accomplishments and
Future Challenges
2
A Roadmap to Policy Research Accomplishments and
Future Challenges
  • Policy-related research has been ongoing for many
years in both systems management and security.
  • The motivation for this work lies in the
requirement for systems to adapt to events such
as failures, intrusions or changes of user
    requirements.
  • Policies define rules governing changes in the
behaviour of systems. However, with policies came
    a number of research questions

3
A Roadmap to Policy Research Accomplishments and
Future Challenges
  • What form should policies take declarative or
    procedural specifications, goals, utility
functions? Are these forms complementary or
    inherently incompatible?
  • How do policies relate to the systems information
    models and business processes?
  • Can policies be analysed? What properties can be
satisfied or guaranteed in a policy-based system?
  • Can policies be derived from higher-level
security and business goals? To what extent?
  • How do we engineer and test policy-based systems?
  • What role do policies play in network and systems
    management, access control, security management,
    pervasive computing?

4
A Roadmap to Policy Research Accomplishments and
Future Challenges
  • Solutions have been proposed to some of these
    questions whilst others remain unanswered.
  • Panel Scope
  • State of the art and accomplishments in
    policy-based research.
  • Attempt to identify, motivate and prioritise the
main challenges that lie ahead a.k.a. A roadmap
