Title: Planning for Proficiency

1
Planning for Proficiency
  • 4th Grade Teachers
  • 1-9-2007

2
  • Proper Planning Prevents Poor Performance.
  • Old adage

3
What happens
  • When writers arent planning at all, in fact,
when theyre just drafting and skipping the
    prewriting stage, they write

4
  • Narratives without details the reader needs and
    with details that dont fit
  • Poems, fiction, or narratives with sensory
details they dont need just because someone in a
conference told them they needed to develop their
    ideas
  • Descriptions which do nothing to move a plot
along, in fact, which do the opposite
  • Transactive pieces which are downloaded data
dumps instead of pieces focused on one key idea.
  • Letters to the reviewer that are lists of
questions the teacher has thought of instead of
real reflection on the part of writers.

5
Students need
  • help to focus their ideas
  • Assistance with planning different types of
    pieces before they write
  • conference at the prewriting stage, not the final
    revision or editing stages
