5Differentiated Instruction
- This means providing different avenues to
acquiring content, to processing or making sense
of ideas, and to developing products so that each
student can learn effectively. - (Tomlinson, 2001, p. 1).

8Content Differentiation
- When differentiating content, we can change
- What we teach and/or
- How students can access what we teach.
(Tomlinson, 2001)
9Key elements in differentiating content
- Several elements and materials are used to
support instructional content. - Align tasks and objectives to learning goals.
- Instruction is concept-focused and
principle-driven e.g. backwards design.

10Process differentiation
What different opportunities are available for
students to "make sense" of the information?
11Examples anyone?
- What are different ways to learn about human
anatomy?
12Product differentiation
- What are different ways that students can
demonstrate they have achieved learning
objectives?
NOTE! Be careful when assessing learning using
performance assessments, such as presentations,
projects, etc. You must evaluate the students
demonstration of content knowledge and targeted
skills, not just how well they present.
13Think-Pair-Share
How does differentiated instruction relate to
inclusion?
14Small Group Activity
- Describe a typical lesson that you have seen or
remember from school. (Note, you can share a
lesson that you access from a web site). - Identify aspects that might be a problem for
different kinds of learners. - Come up with some ideas of how you can modify the
content, process, and product to reach a wider
range of learners.

16Make-up exam
- You MUST turn in your old mid-term before taking
the test. If you do not have your old mid-term
with you, you may not take the make-up. This was
announced in the last class session when I
discussed the make-up test. - This is a closed-book test All papers, cell
phones, backpacks, etc. must be put away before
the test is distributed.
