Introductory Paragraph
  • Background Information Rephrase the essay topic
    to demonstrate understanding and to orientate
    the reader to the essay topic.
  • Focus statement the aims of the essay i.e. In
    this essay I will
  • Position statement stance
  • Foreshadow and introduce the key points for the
    body of the essay and in the order that they will
    come in the essay in relation to their
    significance to the essay topic.

Body of Essay
  • Elaboration on key points
  • Topic sentence The theme is outlined in general
    through the use of a topic sentence.
  • An explanation The generalisation is explained
    in relation to its significance to the essay.
  • An example A specific example that demonstrates
    the application of the generalisation.
  • Using references is a good way to illustrate the
    example.
  • A link Link the example to the topic question
    and show the relevance that it had to the essay
    question.
