Details
  • The first Treistmans show up in Houston, Texas in
1984, when my father Martin Treistman moves to
Kingwood, Texas (a suburb of Houston) from New
Jersey to start a new business at age 46 as a
food broker. Sandra Treistman, a high school
Spanish teacher, was 43. Steven Treistman was 18
and soon to be a freshman at U. of Texas. We came
    by plane and by automobile.

4
Patterns
  • The Treistman family followed a common pattern in
education for immigrants to the united states.
The promotion of education in the next
generation. Although ________ did not attend
college all of his children were expected to.
  • New York City was a common landing point for many
immigrants. My family followed the migration
pattern that many Jews, in particular Polish Jews
    followedthey went to Jersey.

5
Patterns Continued
  • Martin Treistman was looking for a new business
    opportunity to support his family.
  • A friend of his in Texas offered to sell him a
    part of his existing business.
  • The Treistmans felt welcome in Houston especially
since there were so many people from the
    northeastern United States
  • It took about 10 years for the Treistmans to get
used to the Texas way of doing things, everything
from the way people talked to the way meats were
    cut at the deli counter

Trends
  • The Treistmans were a part of a movement of
Soviet and Polish Jewry around 1900. They came to
America through Ellis Island to live a better
life. They were very poor, but always knew the
importance of a good education as they embraced
    the American dream.
  • The Treistmans have lived in the suburbs of
Houston for over 20 years and has watched as
Houston has grown out towards them in Kingwood.
Houston annexed Kingwood in 1999 in order to
    continue Houstons growth outward

Ethics
  • Members of my family left the old world of
Eastern Europe and Russia because of Pogroms.
  • Pogrom The word became internationally known
after a wave of anti-Jewish riots swept southern
Russia in 18811884, causing world-wide outcry
and propelling mass Jewish emigration. According
to the records of the history of the Jews in the
United States, the Jewish emigration from Russia
increased drastically in these years, totaling to
about 2 million Russian Jews in period 18801920.
  • Some members of my family that did not emigrate
    perished in the Holocaust.
  • The Holocaust refers to Nazi Germany's systematic
genocide of various ethnic, religious, national,
and secular groups during World War II starting
in 1941 and continuing through to 1945.
  • The Jews of Europe were the main targets of the
Holocaust, in what the Nazis called the "Final
Solution of the Jewish Question". Other groups
    deemed "undesirablewere also persecuted and
murdered. The total death toll is estimated at
    between 12 and 26 million.

Across Disciplines
  • Demographics Houstons population has changed
greatly over the past 20 years that my family has
    lived here.

RulesTreistman Family Tree (with pics)
10
Multiple Perspectives
  • My parents had differing opinions about living in
    Texas.
  • Martin Treistman was having a house built for him
when he moved to Texas in a neighborhood where
all of the houses were new in 1984. Martin did
not have a difficult time adjusting to Texas, but
Sandra Treistman went back to work full time as
she adjusted to leaving her parents back in New
    Jersey
  • Many Native Texans do not appreciate people
immigrating to Texas from other states and
    countries

11
Missing Data
  • -I wish I could ask my grandfather exactly how he
felt when he heard his son and family were
    moving to Texas.
  • -Exactly how hard was it to make the final
    decision to move to Texas?
  • -Any regrets about moving to Texas?
  • -Would you do it again if given the chance?
  • -What is your favorite thing about Texas?

12
Reflections SlideWhat did I learn about my family
  • The decision to move to Texas was not as
difficult as I always assumed it was.
  • I learned that the family staying together and
not being spread out all over the country creates
    a strong family bond.
  • My family will not move again out of Texas any
time in the near or distant future.

13
Over TimeTimeline of GTT for The Treistmans
  • Insert timeline
  • The biggest change is the city of Houston and its
    amazing growth
  • The smallest change is that Houston despite of
its size, has remained a friendly place to live
    and work
