1Woven Wire
Presentation 103, March 2006
2Woven Wire From Major Wire
- Major Wire offers two types of woven wire
- Tempered OptimumWire
- 304 Stainless Steel
3High Carbon Wire
- Nearly all non-stainless wire sold in the
aggregate industry is high carbon wire with
various metallurgical content. - How the wire is processed can have a significant
effect on the performance and wear life of the
screen cloth. - There are 3 common forms of wire processing
- Cold or hard drawn wire
- Oil tempered wire (stress relieved)
- OptimumWire patent wire, tempered and stress
relieved -
OptimumWire is a registered trademark of Major

8Hardness
The harder the wire, the more resistance it has
to abrasion and wear.
.250 wire diameter
9Ductility
Refers to the flexibility of the wire, how well
the screen will handle impact and twisting.
.250 wire diameter
10Tensile Strength
The higher the tensile strength, the more
resistance to stretching or snapping.
.250 wire diameter
11Major Wire uses only Patent process tempered
OptimumWire for both its woven wire Flex-Mat
high-carbon wire products.
Wire is heated red and then slowly cooled in a
proprietary process before drawing.
Slow cooling by special process
Heated red
Elongated molecules near the surface.
Rounded molecules in the center.
Wire is stressed relieved prior to drawing.
Excellent tensile strength, hardness and
ductility.
12OptimumWire In High Impact Applications
- Major Wire uses a specialized wire for wire
diameters of 7/16, 1/2, 5/8 and 3/4. These
larger wire diameters have a different
metallurgical content than smaller-diameter
OptimumWire. - Manganese is added to the wire content. Manganese
work hardens and this increases wear life as it
becomes more abrasion resistant and is better
able to withstand impact loads.
13Stainless Steel Wire Cloth
- There are many versions of stainless steel wire
cloth available the version chosen depends upon
your specific screening application. - The most commonly used stainless steel in
aggregates is 304 stainless. This is a
non-magnetic alloy that withstands rusting when
exposed to the elements. - Stainless steel normally polishes as it is used
in aggregate applications. The smooth surface
makes it ideal for sticky or dusty applications.
14Stainless Steel Wire Cloth
- Some competitors offer 430 stainless wire screen
cloth versus 304 in an effort to reduce their
selling price. - 430 stainless offers the same hardness tensile
strength. - However, it has significantly less ductility,
which can will cause premature wear.
15Hardness
The harder the wire, the more resistance it has
to abrasion and wear.
16Tensile Strength
The higher the tensile strength, the more
resistance to stretching or snapping.
17Ductility
Refers to the flexibility of the wire, how well
the screen will handle impact and twisting.

18Woven Wire Types
- Major Wire offers 5 types of woven wire cloth.
Square Opening
Double-Weave
Single Shute
Triple Shutes
HyperSlotTM
19Square Opening
- Most commonly used screen type.
- Provides a precise passing product.
- For aggregate, Major Wire offers wire diameters
of .047 to .750. - For aggregate, we stock from 1/8 square opening
to 4 square opening. - For fine screening, we offer openings from 8 to
500 mesh count per inch. - 20 hook designs to choose from, and available in
flat sheets.
20Double-Weave
- Handles impact better than single-wire cloth.
Can withstand 3 to 4 times the impact force of
single-weave cloth. - Lower crimp provides longer wear life.
- Provides more open area than punch plate (up to
50) and increases production. - Can handle feed materials up to 16. Perfect for
pre-scalping or scalping 6 to 12 rock. - Available in openings of 1.25 to 5 with wire
diameters of .243 to .500. - An innovative screening solutions product for
your customers.
21Single Triple Shute Slotted Cloth
- Common before the introduction of
self-cleaningscreens. - Should not be used where precise sizing is
required.
- Typically used where blinding is a problem.
- Does allow oversize material to pass.
22HyperSlotTM
- Openings of 6 to 24.
- Commonly used to remove large amounts of fines or
wherever there is a severe blinding problem. - Major Wires unique design uses alternating
crimped straight wires.
23HyperSlotTM
- Great for de-sanding or removing large amounts of
fines. - Major Wires unique design offers 3 benefits
- Crimped wires tend to slow material down so that
it has more chance to come in contact with
openings in the screen cloth. - Crimped wires tend to roll the material, which
does a better job of removing fines. - With alternating crimped and straight wires, the
screen cloth does allow for some vibration.
This improves the products ability to reduce
blinding in comparison to all straight wire
slotted cloth. - Another innovative screenings solution product
for your customers from Major Wire!
