OUR NEW ARRIVALS
  • On Monday 20th October, the chickens arrived in
2CC. There were 3 chickens that had already
cracked out of their egg and 19 eggs still
waiting to hatch. Danny brought 2 incubators for
the 19 eggs and 1 Big house for the chickens
after they have come out of the egg.

INSIDE THE EGG PART 1
  • This is a picture of an egg 10 days after
fertilisation. As you can see many parts of the
chicken have begun to form. You can see the eye
and the blood vessels that feed the chicken.

Breaking the Shell
  • The chickens have a special tooth on the end of
their beak to help them to break open the shell.
This tooth is called an egg tooth. The shell is
very hard to crack and the chickens have to have
    rests while theyre hatching.

HATCHING CHICKENS
  • Chickens are in the egg for 21-22 days before
they hatch. When the chickens arrived they had
been in the egg for 19 days. On Tuesday the first
egg hatched in the incubator. The incubator is
set at 37 degrees so that the chickens feel like
    theyre under their mum.

7
In the Incubator
  • After the chicken is hatched it is wet and very
tired. It has to stay in the incubator for a few
hours until its feathers are dry and it has had
    a rest.

8
The Egg Shell
  • This is an egg after the chicken has hatched out.
You can see some of the yolk is still in the
egg. The blood vessels carry the yolk, which is
the food, to the chicken while it is in the egg.

9
Growing Chickens
  • This picture is of a chicken that hatched 5 days
before it arrived in 2CC. This chicken has
already got new feathers and its egg tooth is
smaller than when it hatched out of the egg.
When the chickens are 6 months old they can begin
    to breed themselves.

Time to say Goodbye!
  • On Friday 24th October, the chickens left our
classroom. When they left, 17 eggs had hatched, 1
died and 2 eggs still hadnt cracked at all. The
chickens were noisy but cute and we really
enjoyed and learnt a lot from having them in our
    classroom.
