Chapter 3 Question 1
  • What was the problem with the Jefferson Davis
    school bus?
  • Every day the driver would run the black children
off of the road just for fun and so the white
children on the bus could jeer at them.

4
Chapter 3 Question 2
  • 2. Why did the Logan children dig a hole in the
    road?
  • The Logan children wanted to get even with the
Jefferson Davis school bus driver and kids. By
digging a hole in the road, they hoped to cause
the bus to at least get stuck (which it did).

5
Chapter 3 Question 3
  • How did Mama and Big Ma react to the news of the
    stuck bus?
  • Mama and Big Ma were glad to see justice done,
though they did not know that their children were
    responsible.

6
Chapter 3 Question 4
  • Who were the riders, and what were they doing?
  • The riders were a gang of white men who rode in a
convoy of cars out to the black neighborhoods to
burn and hurt the black people who had supposedly
stepped out of their proper place.

  • Why was Casey upset?
  • Cassie thought the night men were after her and
the boys for digging out the hole in the road and
causing the white school bus to break down.

9
Chapter 4 Question 2
  • 2. Why were the night men actually out the night
    Cassie saw them?
  • The night men had come to tar and feather Mr.
Tatum for calling Mr. Barnett liar.

10
Chapter 4 Question 3
  • 3. Why had papa hired Mr. Morrison?
  • Papa knew that there was racial trouble in the
area, and he wanted Mr. Morrison to be at his
home to protect his family while he was out
    working on the railroad.

11
Chapter 4 Question 4
  • 4. Why did Stacey get whipped?
  • Staceys mother, the teacher, thought that he had
been cheating on a test. Instead of explaining
that T.J. was the cheater and had slipped the
notes to him to get rid of them. Stacey accepted
the punishment which should have been for T.J.

12
Chapter 4 Question 5
  • 5. What did Mama do when she found out that the
children had been at the Wallaces store?
  • Mamas immediate reaction was relatively calm.
On Saturday, however, she took the children to
see Mr. Berry, whom the Wallaces had burned. She
wanted the children to see what kind of people
the Wallaces were and the cruelty of which they
    were capable.

13
Chapter 4 Question 6
  • 6. Why did Mama try to convince Mr. Turner to
stop shopping at the Wallaces store?
