Title: COMMISSIONED FOR SERVICE
1COMMISSIONED FOR SERVICE
Philippians 24 Each of you should be concerned
not just about your own interests, but also the
interests of others. NKJV
2JESUS THE GREATEST SERVANT
- Philippians 26
- Think of yourselves the way Christ thought of
HimselfHe didnt claim special
privileges, instead He lived a selfless, obedient
life - The Message
3JESUS THE GREATEST SERVANT
- Philippians 26,7
- Who, being in very nature God, did not consider
equality with God something to be grasped, but
made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a
servant, being made in human likeness. NLT
4JESUS THE GREATEST SERVANT
- Philippians 26-7
- Jesus Christ was truly God.But he did not try
to remain equal with God. He gave up everything
and became a slave, when he became like one of
us. CEV.
5WHAT IS A SERVANT?
- Doulos - One who is under submission to
anotherliterally a bondservant (slave)one who
is in bondage to another - We are called to be in submission to the Lord
Jesus and to one another
6WHAT IS A SERVANT?
- One who is called to the ministry of others
rather than the service of self
Servanthood is not something we do, but
something we are! David Cape
7WHAT IS A SERVANT?
- Always anticipates needs without being asked or
told - Never asks what is in it for self, but serves
unconditionally - Looks for opportunities to serve and
- Serves when no one else is watching.
8MOTIVES FOR SERVING
- Self love?
- Praise from others?
- Personal significance?
- Power?
- Status?
9MOTIVES FOR SERVING
- One of the greatest hindrances to service or
servant living is the desire for some form of
exaltationposition, praise, prestige, and power
10MOTIVES FOR SERVING
11JESUS THE GREATEST SERVANT
- PRINCIPLE 1
- Perhaps no passage illustrates the source and
nature of the heart of a servant more than John
13.
12WANT TO BE WORLD CLASS?
13JESUS THE GREATEST SERVANT
PRINCIPLE 1
- The source of Jesus actions lay in His knowledge
and security of who He was and where He was going
(John 131-3)
14JESUS THE GREATEST SERVANT
- Jesus demonstrated His love
- John 131 Having loved his own who were in the
world, he now showed them the full extent of his
love. - Love is something you do!
15JESUS THE GREATEST SERVANT
- Jesus taught them the lesson of humility.John
133 Jesus knew that the Father had put all
things under his power, and so he had come from
the God and was returning to God so he got up
from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and
wrapped a towel around his waist. - Jesus saw a need.John 135 After that, he poured
water into a basin and began to wash his
disciples feet, drying them with the towel that
was wrapped around him.
16A SOLEMN TRUTH
- John 1316-17
- I tell you the solemn truth, the slave is not
greater than his master, nor is the one who is
sent as a messenger greater than the one who sent
him. If you understand these things, you will be
blessed if you do them
17A SOLEMN TRUTH
- Jesus is looking to all believers to take the
servants towel as a minister to others rather
than seek self elevation. True blessing comes
from serving those around us.
18A SOLEMN TRUTH
- The fundamental issue in living as servants, as
those committed to meeting the needs of others,
is a deep down humility that is willing to pick
up the servants towel regardless of ones status
or station in life.
19JESUS THE GREATEST SERVANT
- Matt. 2311-12
- But He who is greatest among you shall be your
servant. And whoever exalts himself will be
humbled, and he who humbles himself will be
exalted NKJV
20COMMISSIONED FOR SERVICE
- PRINCIPLE 2
- Greatness in Gods kingdom is never to be found
in position or power or in the praise and
opinions of men, but in servant-like service to
others
21COMMISSIONED FOR SERVICE
PRINCIPLE 2
- The real test of whether we are really maturing
and learning to become a Christ-like servant is
how we act when people treat us like one.
22THE RESPONSE TO THE CALL OF SERVICE
- WHAT CAN I DO?
- The service of small things.Matthew 1042 And if
anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of
these little ones because he is my disciple, I
tell you the truth, he will certainly not lose
his reward. - The service of listening.James 1 19 My dear
brothers take note of this Everyone should be
quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become
angry,
23THE RESPONSE TO THE CALL OF SERVICE
- The service of hospitality.1 Peter 49 Offer
hospitality to one another without grumbling - The service of ministry.1 Peter 410 Each one
should use whatever gift he has received to
serve others, faithfully administering Gods
grace in its various forms.
24THE RESPONSE TO THE CALL OF SERVICE
- WHAT CAN I DO?
- The service of bearing one anothers
burdens.Galatians 62 Carry each others burdens
and in this way you fulfill the law of Christ.
25THE REWARDS OF SERVICE
- PRINCIPLE 3
- Servant living will be rewarded in the future.
One of the hindrances to servant living is mans
impatience and his desire to be served now! .
26THE REWARDS OF SERVICE
- When we seek our reward now through the praise of
men as did the Pharisees, we lose the power of
God on our lives and ministries and we lose
rewards in the future (cf. Matt. 61-4).
27THE REWARDS OF SERVICE
- When you work for the Lord, the pay may not be so
great, but you cant beat the retirement plan!
28FOR YOU TO THINK ABOUT
- Principle Following the example of the Saviour,
believers are to function as servants who seek to
minister to one another in loving and selfless
service. - Issue Am I, in submission to the Lord and to
others, seeking to serve, or am I seeking to be
served in the pursuit of my wants?
