What is the CKS service?
  • An up to-date-source of clinical knowledge that
    can help healthcare professionals manage the
    common conditions generally seen in primary and
    first contact care
  • Based around 200 topics that cover acute and
    chronic diseases, and disease prevention
  • News service
  • Links to other resources e.g. patient information
    leaflets and DynaMed

What is the CKS service based on?
  • The CKS service will principally utilise
    secondary research and evidence from standard NHS
    resources, and a range of high quality
    peer-reviewed systematic reviews
  • .using primary research and expert opinion where
    appropriate

Who is providing the CKS service?
  • In October 2006, SCHIN (a not for profit company)
    and EBSCO Publishing were awarded the contract to
    provide the CKS service for the NHS
  • Knowledge developed by a multidisciplinary team
    of doctors, information scientists, pharmacists
    and nurse specialist in prescribing based in
    Newcastle-upon-Tyne

  • Generalist healthcare professionals GPs, GP
    registrars, nurse practitioners, practice nurses,
    health visitors, district nurses
  • Medical librarians
  • NHS managers, students, other healthcare
    professionals and patients

How will the knowledge be presented?
  • Topic reviews, in a number of formatsfrom March
    2007
  • Full text summary basic information, management
    options, information on the effectiveness of clini
    cal interventions and tests, and links to further
    information and to references
  • Clinical Summaries side of A4 and prescriptions
  • Immediate Reference designed to be read in 15
    seconds or less

What is happening to PRODIGY Knowledge?
  • The CKS service will build on the existing
    PRODIGY knowledge base
  • PRODIGY guidance (full text and quick reference
    guides) will initially be available through the
    CKS service
  • PRODIGY guidance will gradually be replaced by
    Topic Reviews over a period of 3 years
  • PRODIGY guidance will be kept up-to-date until
    replaced

    available in March 2007
