Swami Dayanand

• Swami Dayanand was a great social reformer and is
  the maker of modern India.
• His major works include
• 1)Revival of the Vedas
• -At that time people were prohibited to read
  them.
• 2)Revival of Vedic Sanskars
• -The 16 stages of life, he wrote in Sanskar
  Biddhi.

• 3)Upholding of religious principles and
  denunciation of blind faith.
• 4)Uprooting of caste system and untouchability.
• 5)Ideals for education and opening to all,
  especially women who were not allowed education.

• Dayanand was born on 1825 at Tankara in Gujarat,
  India.
• 1837-He observed Shivratvi fast and lost faith in
  idol worship.
• 1841-1842-His sister and uncle died, resolved to
  seek means to conquer death.

• 1846-He left home and met yogis and got initiated
  into Brahmcharya.
• 1847-1859-Practised yoga with many Sanyasis.
• 1860-1863-Went to Mathura, studied Vedas,
  Sanskrit grammar at Ashram of Swami Virjanand
  Saraswati. He took vow to devote his life to
  spreading values and remove superstitions.

• 1863-1874-He visited allover India and had
  discussions with Christian, Muslim and Puranic
  leaders. Nobody was able to provide anything
  better than Vedic values. He also wrote Sayarth
  Prakash.
• 1875,April 10th- Arya Samaj was founded. In
  establishing Arya Samaj Dayanand made it clear
  that the aim was not to start a new religion but
  to promote the pure form of Hindu Dharm on
  teachings of Vedas.

• 1882-Dayanand sent a memoriam to the Queen
  Empress and Viceroy signed by 2 million people to
  stop cow slaughter. He had a lot of influence on
  Mahatma Gandhi and many Arya Samaj leaders for
  independence for India.
• 1883,Sep 29-He was poisoned.
• 1883,Oct 30-Died
• Oct 31-Cremated at Malusar Crematorium,
  Ajmer.

• To end in will quote from one of his writings
• It is not at all my purpose to find a new
  religion. My sole objective is to believe in what
  is true, help others to believe in it and to
  reject what is untrue. Also I help people to do
  the same.

• If I had been partial, I would of championed
  anyone of the faiths prevailing in India but
  neither I accept the demerits of different
  faiths whether Indian or Alien. I nor reject
  what is good in them.

• He alone is entitled to be called a human being
  who, keeping his mind cool, feels for the
  happiness and unhappiness, profit and loss of
  others in the same way as he does not fear the
  unjust, however powerful he maybe, but fears to
  virtuous though weak.

• Not only this, he should always exert himself to
  his utmost to protect and promote the cause of
  the virtuous people even if they are poor and
  weak, and to discourage and suppress. Destroy
  those who are wicked and unrighteous, even though
  they be the mightiest of the world.

• In other words, a man should as far as it lies in
  his power constantly Endeavour to undermine the
  power of unjust and to strengthen the power of
  just even at the cost of great suffering and even
  if one has to sacrifice his life.
