Title: The Biblical Blessing of Marriage 23

1
The Biblical Blessing of Marriage 2/3
  • The roles and attitudes in building a blessed
    marriage

2
Introduction
  • In our previous sermon we saw how God established
    the marriage covenant.
  • Gods attitude surrounding the marriage covenant.
  • The honorable relationship that many avoid.
  • This covenant is the foundation of a man and
    woman having a blessed relationship.

3
Introduction
  • Still, there is much more to a relationship than
    simply keeping a covenant.
  • There are roles for both the husband and wife
that make spouses set on serving the Lord
    have a blessed relationship.
  • A godly attitude behind the God-given roles
become the tipping point as to how beautiful and
    blessed the marriage becomes.
  • NOTE there may be happy marriages, where
    husbands/wives co-exist peacefully, but
Christians should not be content with anything
less than giving their lives to the Lord,
including in their God-given roles with a
    like-minded attitude.

4
The Role and Attitude of Men Entering Marriage
  • His roles of love toward his wife (and children)
  • One of provider.
  • He provides for the physical welfare of his
    family. Gen. 215 317ff
  • How much more he provides for their spiritual
    lives. Eph. 529, 64 cp. 1 Cor. 1434-35

5
The Role and Attitude of Men Entering Marriage
  • His roles of love toward his wife (and children)
  • One of protector.
  • Just as Jesus is the shepherd of his flock (the
church), likewise is the head of the family its
    natural protector.
  • He is also spiritually circumspect not only of
his life but that of his family. cp. Acts 2028

6
The Role and Attitude of Men Entering Marriage
  • His roles of love toward his wife (and children)
  • One of sacrifice. Eph. 525 64
  • Although in a position of authority, his role is
    one of selflessness.
  • His actions and thoughts are always for the
wellbeing of his wife/children entrusted to him.

7
The Role and Attitude of Men Entering Marriage
  • His attitude toward his wife true love.
  • Cherishing her. Eph. 529
  • This companion for life is meant to give her life
    to her husbands headship.
  • The result is that a husband is to truly cherish
her as a person and work she does for his good.

8
The Role and Attitude of Men Entering Marriage
  • His attitude toward his wife true love.
  • Dwelling with his wife with understanding. 1
    Pet. 37
  • As men under submission to Christ we should be
understanding toward our wives who are under our
    authority. cp. 1 Cor. 113
  • Through loving headship a husband is to be
sensitive to his wifes needs and well-being.
  • Such is difficult for many men to exemplify, and
nearly impossible when men are filled with
    selfishness.

9
The Role and Attitude Of Women Entering Marriage
  • Her roles
  • Her desire shall be for her husband. Gen. 316 1
    Tim. 211-15
  • It is a difficult thing for a woman who has her
own mind/will to subject her desire for His.
    cp. Gen. 36
  • Yet, her role is to submit to his headship. Eph.
    522-24

10
The Role and Attitude Of Women Entering Marriage
  • Her roles
  • One of bearing children.
  • Gods will is for this earth to be populated,
with people being raised up a godly seed. Gen.
    126
  • Again, our general view of children, including
the role of wives bearing children, are distantly
removed from how the Bible portrays this role.
    Psa. 1273 cp. Gen. 162 301

11
The Role and Attitude Of Women Entering Marriage
  • Her attitude toward her husband.
  • A submissive spirit, knowing that her husband
must submit to the will of Christ. Eph. 523
  • This attitude, beyond the role, is a great
encouragement to husbands who are Christians and
non Christians. cp. 1 Pet. 31-5
  • Having a wife who supports her (imperfect) head
who is especially trying to lead his family is a
great blessing to her husband, family, including
    herself.
  • Such an attitude takes great humility and trust
    in the Lord.

12
Conclusion
  • While the roles and attitudes are not earth
shattering, they are often lacking in many
Christian men and women who are married.
  • God bless all His children who live by faith and
long to transform our lives to these God ordained
    roles and attitudes.
