• Often related strongly with religion
• Chastity is often seen as synonymous with
  Abstinence
• While sometimes synonymous with Abstinence, sex
  in a monogamous marriage is still seen as
  Chastity

• While some people may have religious reasons for
  being Abstinent, Abstinence can also be used as a
  lifestyle
• People can have a variety of reasons for using
  Abstinence as a Lifestyle choice

Medical concerns with Abstinence

• Another reason that people abstain from sexual
  intercourse are the numerous health benefits
• Other than protection from STIs, there are many
  different health benefits that arise from
  abstaining

Health Benefits and Risks from Abstinence

• A modern argument that is benefiting from
  abstinence is by not ejaculating you save various
  vital nutrients in the semen that can be absorbed
  back into the blood stream
• Contrary to that belief, studies have also shown
  that in males abstinence can lead to elevated
  levels of testosterone and aggression and
  personality problems

Religious Abstinence

• Abstinence is interpreted differently in many
  different religions
• In Christianity, Judaism, Islam, and Hinduism,
  there are various different interpretations of
  what abstinence is and whats expected in a
  sexual relationship

• The Islam religion forbids intercourse outside of
  marriage, but discourages against lifestyle
  abstinence and also has certain religious times
  where abstinence is practiced
• Judaism also forbids intercourse outside of
  marriage, but differently from Christianity its
  clerical figures and groups are not required to
  be abstinent

Religious Abstinence continued

• In Christianity, intercourse is meant to occur
  between married people and religious figures are
  required to abstain
• Hinduism places great emphasis on abstinence,
  with the tradition of Brahmacharya which is seen
  as a way of harnessing the combined energies of
  the body and mind to gain spiritual realization
• Also, in Hinduism the semen is seen as sacred and
  is preserved and only used for the purpose of
  procreation

Modern Abstinence Movements and popularity

• With the growing aids risk, Abstinence has been
  seen as a safe way of avoiding infection
• Many Abstinence movements dont push the need to
  completely abstain from intercourse, but promote
  the idea of safe sex

Abstinence Movements

• A popular abstinence movement that is growing in
  strength is True Love Waits in America
• They ask teenagers to refrain from sex before
  marriage and true love, no matter what religion
  or beliefs they may have
