The rub

• ESRI has introduced a new line of geo products

So?

• ArcView 3.x is customized using the Avenue
  programming language.
• ArcView 8.x is customized using Visual Basic and
• All the other components of ArcGIS are programmed
  using Visual Basic

So what does that mean for us?

So which one to choose?

• ArcView 3x has big installed base and many users
  have big investments in avenue scripts
• ArcGIS just came out and is very powerful so some
  large users are going to switch, if not to ArcGIS
  to ArcView 8.x.
• And there is NO WAY to convert Avenue to VB! (
  ESRI offers 1,000,000 for anyone who can do it)

How Long?

• I figure that AV3.x will be around for at least 5
  years
• So what does that mean for you?
• It means that you could find a job with an outfit
  that uses either!
• So which to learn??????????????????

• Lean Avenue and forget ArcGis
• Learn VB and forget ArcView 3.x
• Learn both

Programming Experience

• Avenue is an Object Oriented Programming language
  (OOP)
• There does not seem to be a strong correlation
  between being successful with Avenue and having
  programming experience!
• OOP experience is helpful but we dont expect you
  to have that.

• You can download 90day copy of ArcView from ESRI.
  
• The student price for AV3.x and each extension is
  250 ea.
