4. Know the Rules of H and W
  • Use WindowsKEYE to open Windows Explorer look
for your H and W drives.
  • H\ Your Home Directory is your private file
storage space not web accessible (20 Megabyte
or 20 floppy disks worth in a space on a computer
    called JUNO).
  • W\ Your Web Directory is your private file
storage space that is web accessible (20 Megabyte
    on ALONSO)
  • Both H and W are yours to use for your whole
time here at X, but do not save PERSONAL files or
music on these drives. The System Administrator
has permission to see them at any time.

6
5. Know How to Store
  • A - The A or Floppy Drive is NOT a good place to
    store your work.
  • ALWAYS use 2 or more floppies to store your work.
If you store your work on 1 floppy, it will break
and you will lose your work.
  • To store important work use the H and W drives
because they are BACKED UP and the system keeps
three copies of your work. If you ever lost a
file, you could get TSG to restore it for you at
    no cost.
  • For more information or to learn to MAP or POINT
your residence computer to your H and W drives,
    go to http//www.stfx.ca/tsg/

7
6. Manage Files in One Folder
  • On your H drive you will see a folder called
Landocuments keep all your files in
    H\Landocuments in subfolders under
    H\Landocuments
  • For example
  • H\Landocuments\Personal\
  • H\Landocuments\Personal\momletters OR
  • H\Landocuments\Courses\
  • H\Landocuments\Courses\English100\
  • H\Landocuments\Courses\English 100\term1paper\

8
7. Save All Your Work Often
  • If you have a CD burner on your residence
computer you could burn CDs of your
H\Landocuments folder every once in awhile as an
    extra file storage precaution.
  • WARNING about SAVING FILES IN Computer LABS!
You may, at times, send yourself, or receive, an
attachment in email. You may choose just to open
the attachment instead of taking the time to save
it first and then opening it. it. Once you log
out, you will lose your files.
  • A BETTER practice is to SAVE the FILE in H or W
and THEN open it that way you know exactly where
it is and, as you work on it, you will be saving
    it in a safe place.

9
8. Use Your Web Space
  • W/ is your Web drive! File storage and
    Web-presence.
  • This is your Web space to use. You can save
files here and anyone in the world can see and
    download them.
  • You could also use this space to mount a Web
    site.
  • To store your information as a Web site, create a
file called welcome.html or index.html and start
    your own Web space.

10
9. Extend Your Use of W\
  • YOU are in the lab. You save your file on W You
go home, download file from W to work on it.
    OR.
  • You save a file to W and one of your parents or
a friend can download it to their computer and
make editing comments on your paper.
  • AGAIN anyone in the world can see your W
directory so treat the space with respect
nothing personal should be saved there.

11
10. Take Charge of Technology
  • 1. Learn to type on-line
  • 2. Download freeware here http//www.northcanton.
    sparcc.org/technology/keyboarding/freeware.html
  • 3. Make use of the on-line components of many of
    your texts.
  • 4. Check department and individual professors
    Web sites/

12
11. Use a Wide Range of Search Engines
  • One of the BEST resource sites on Internet use is
this site by Ellen Chamberlain, at the University
of South Carolina - Beaufort. http//www.sc.edu/be
    aufort/library/pages/bones/bones.shtml
  • Some great search engines are
  • www.vivisimo.com
  • www.kartoo.com www.beaucoup.com www.profusion.com
  • Try them!
