Title: The Carbon Challenge

1
The Carbon Challenge Transforming the domestic
market for energy and heat
2
Issues
  • Alleviation of fuel poverty
  • Reduce carbon footprint
  • Meet renewables targets
  • Job Security

3
The Carbon Challenge Priorities
2020
2009
Current situation
Adopt renewable technologies
Decarbonise gas electricity grid Mass market
adoption of LZC technologies
Improve existing product efficiencies
Inefficient boiler park. Early adopter LZC
renewable.
Solar Biomass Wind Hydro
Heat pumps Community htg (CHP). Heat boxes
Boiler efficiencies. Passive flue heat
recovery. mCHP
4
Fuel Poverty
  • Fuel poverty in the UK is forecast to increase
    from 2006 levels of 3.5mn
  • 69 of fuel poor are owner occupiers
  • Average annual income is 9,500
  • A cost effective solution is required to improve
    heating and hot water efficiency

5
The Elephant in the room
  • Carbon savings can be achieved by improving
    boiler efficiencies-
  • Climate Change Act 2020 interim target requires
    21 reduction versus 2005
  • 96 of all UK dwellings are equipped with central
    heating
  • A band G boiler emits 1 tonne more CO2/yr than a
    Band A boiler
  • 16mn non band A boilers are operating in the UK
    today
  • The installer and the householder understands
    boilers
  • Renewables are not an easy, quick fit replacement
  • Best advice is difficult to come by.

6
Hot Water
  • SEDBUK only measures space heating efficiency
  • Passive flue heat recovery saves 0.25 tonne
    CO2/yr
  • Plus 10k litres of waste water
  • Improved home insulation will result in a demand
    for improved hot water efficiency

7
Baxi Ecogen
  • A mass market replacement technology
  • Utilises existing gas infrastructure and
    installer skill sets
  • Delivers an additional saving of 1 tonne of
    CO2/yr compared to a Band A boiler

8
The transition to green
  • Waiting for electricity grid or gas network
decarbonisation, and/or mass market take-up of
other renewable technologies will mean missing
out on a generation of boiler replacements.
  • Greening energy supply could mean that existing
core technologies will continue to have a role to
play, but at all times maximising efficiency

9
Employment Security
  • Optimising the efficiency of the existing 21mn
boiler park will continue to safeguard the
    employment of the installer community
  • Provision of approved renewable and LZC training
courses will continue to up skill this workforce
  • Manufacturer supply of LZC( transition/ interim)
technologies will fund investment in renewables
  • Continued development by manufacturers of these
    technologies will create green jobs

10
In Conclusion
  • A decarbonised grid will not appear overnight
  • The efficiency of the existing boiler park can be
improved to deliver immediate carbon savings and
    reduce fuel poverty
  • Employment will be assured by focusing on
existing skill sets and up skilling
  • Renewable and LZC technologies need government
support to ensure mass market adoption
