- German romantic painting, like German romantic
poetry and philosophy, was inspired by a
conception of nature as a manifestation of the
divine. This led to a school of symbolic
landscape, using elements of mysticism and
allegory. Another (rival) school of painters
called the Nazarenes, attempted to recover the
style and spirit of medieval religious art. - Famous German Romantic painters include the
following Rung, Friedrich, and Overbeck.
