A. Reasons for coming to the New World
  • 1. Get rich
  • Jamestown 1st successful settlement in VA
  • Joint-Stock Companies fund them in hopes to get
    rich off the resources Mercantilism
  • 2. Religious dissent (to escape religious
    persecution)
  • Pilgrims- landed in Mass. on the Mayflower in
    1620 and named it Plymouth. The plan build a
    city upon a hill. The eyes of all people are upon
    us. (John Winthrop) ideal Christian Society.

    persecutions they believed religion should be
    involved in politics (govt) and in simple worship
  • c) Quakers- come to NJ. Believe inner light
    God is w/in each of us, paid clergy was
    unnecessary, in plainness in appearance,
    speech
  • d) Catholics- come to Maryland. Believe in good
    deeds, forgiveness, God Father, Son, and Holy
    Spirit, eternal life

  • Joint-stock Colony-colony funded by investors.
  • Proprietary Colony-colony for which the king gave
    land to one or a few people to oversee.
  • Royal colony-A colony with a charter granted by
    the king
  • Self-Governing Colonies-Colony that exercises
    political authority over itself.

  • Indentured servants- paid their way to America
    by working in America for a set amount of time
    (4-7 yrs)
  • Plantation System used both indentured servants
    and slaves to do the farming on the HUGE farms.
  • Middle Passage (boat part) of the Triangle Trade
    Route (between Europe, West Africa, and North
    America)
