Naming Words
  • A word that names a person is a noun
  • Examples
  • The man walks.
  • The girl runs.
  • The dog barks.

More Naming Words
  • A noun names a person and it also can name a
    place or thing.
  • Examples
  • Tom went to the lake. (place or thing?)
  • Did he see the big fish? (place or thing?)

One or More Than One
  • A noun can also name more than one person, place,
    or thing.
  • Examples
  • swimmer ? swimmers
  • pencil ? pencils

Adding -es
  • Some nouns add s to name more than one. Other
    nouns add es. Words that end with s, x, ch, and
    sh add es to name more than one.

  • class ? classes
  • box ? boxes
  • bench ? benches
  • dish? dishes

Nouns that change Spelling
  • A few nouns change their spelling to name more
    than one.
  • Examples
  • child ? children
  • man ? men
  • woman ? women

    things. These special nouns begin with capital
    letters.

  • When you talk about someone else and yourself,
    name yourself last.
