Goals of the Initiative
  • Convert face-to-face professional development
    training into a web-based training format
  • Provide training and technical assistance
    regarding distance learning to member states
  • Develop capacity with states to expand their
    ability to implement distance learning

Accomplishments in 2003-2004
  • Converted the HEAPs three professional
    development modules to an online format
  • Developed customizable sections in the course for
    state specific resources
  • Conducted a review
  • Pilot-tested the online training
  • Evaluated the pilot

Features of the Online Modules
  • The course can be duplicated for each state
  • Each state can modify/add additional resources as
    needed
  • States can run their course as many times as they
    wish
  • States can manage their own course and learners
    independently

Pilot Test - Background
  • Pilot was conducted with teachers in Baltimore
    County, Maryland
  • Pilot consisted of 16 participants, all 16
    completed a pretest evaluation form (100) and 10
    (63) completed a posttest evaluation form
  • The pilot ran for 2 weeks (6/7/2004 6/18/2004)

Pilot Test - Results
  • Overall satisfaction with the course was somewhat
    satisfied (44) or very satisfied (56)
  • Overall, 89 of respondents indicated that the
    information/ideas provided in the online course
    would be either fairly useful (22) or very
    useful (67) to them
  • All of the respondents indicated that they would
    either probably recommend (44) or definitely
    recommend (56) the online course to other people
    who do similar work
  • All of the respondents indicated that it was
    either fairly easy (67) or very easy (33) to
    navigate around the online course

Pilot Test Results cont.
  • Respondents demonstrated positive changes in
    knowledge from pretest to posttest on the
    majority of items (11 of the 15)
  • Respondents felt the course was most successful
    at
  • providing an understanding of the components of
    good assessment (mean 3.78)
  • examining the purpose of grades and assessment
    (3.67)
  • reviewing how participants state framework for
    health education aligns with the National
    Education Standards (3.44)
  • providing information about HEAP and HEAPs
    resources (3.22)

Scope of work for 2004-2005
  • Distance Learning Center web site for all HEAP
    members
  • Training and technical assistance to 11 member
    states (AK, CA, HI, MD, MI, NC, NH, PA, SD, VT,
    WY)
  • customization and use of the online modules in
    the HTMLeZ learning management system (LMS)
  • best practices re web-based learning,
    facilitation, etc.
  • Assistance to states in transferring the online
    modules to their LMS (if necessary)
  • Assisting states with planning
  • Converting two new HEAP modules
  • Evaluating the HEAPs distance learning effort
