Title: Mxico in front of the Global Warming

1
México in front of the Global Warming
2
  • Mexico is the 14 th place in total greenhouse
gases emissions. Considering the size of our
population and our territory, the emissions per
capita are relativelly low, compared to the ones
    from industrialized countries.

3
  • Acording to the Secretaría de Medio Ambiente y
    Recursos Naturales (Semarnat)
  • The location of México, the weather, the
orographical and hydrographic conditions and the
social and economical problems, among other
factors, contribute to the exposure of our
country to hydrometeorological problems that can
cause disasters. These effects will be seen
    exacerbated by the weather change.

And what happens in Puebla?
  • Puebla is one of the states of México that has
suffered the effects of the global weather change
the most. During the last century, it had a
rainful decrease in 200 liters per square meter
and a tendency of 17.5 degrees anual media
    temperature, characteristic of a semiarid
weather, said the Centro Universitario de
Prevención de Desastres Regionales, (Cupreder) of
    the BUAP.
  • It also stated that in winter, the average
temperatures of the city have been over the
    normal ones, causing warm winters.

6
Forest Loss
  • The fast forest loss in La Malinche, a hill in
Puebla, in the last 25 years has provoked the
liberation to the atmosphere of 20 tons of CO2,
gas that contributes to the weather change.
  • Between 1980 y 2002, the deforested area of all
the mountain surface that supplies to Puebla city
of air, water and other environmental resources,
    were growing to 5, 355 square kilómeters.For
that reason, its stimated also a reduction of
rain precipitations in some areas of the Valley
of Puebla up to 100 milimeters.

7
Deforestation
  • On july 2007 a hill fell down in the Sierra Negra
of Puebla caused by the deforestation of the
hills. This accident burried a bus with 32
persons on board, who finally died.

8
Forest fires
  • During this year in Puebla
  • there have been registered
  • around 60 forest fires that
  • have affected an average
  • of 60,000 square meters,
  • said the Secretaría del
  • Medio Ambiente y Recursos
  • Naturales and pointed out
  • that this 2008 its considered
  • critic, because of the estimate
  • that the forest areas will be
  • reduced 50 due to occasional rain.

Intense rains friday august 17th 2007
  • The months of september and october were the most
rainful and had a big incidence of hurricanes in
the country in this lapse were predicted rian
precipitations that were 19 superior to the
historic media. It was warned by the Comisión
Nacional del Agua. The areas where there were a
bigger number of storms, they said, are located
in the north states of the country, like
Tamaulipas, Nuevo León, Coahuila in the slope of
the Golfo de Mexico, as the Valley of Mexico
which includes the DF, Morelos, Edo. de México
and Puebla. He pointed out that form august to
    october
  • there were some 240 intense storms
  • over the 20 milímeters in 24 hours
  • , which represented a risk for the sewage
  • system.

10
Hurricane Stan October 11th 2005
  • Seven states were affected by the Stan
    hurricane, where were registered emergencies,
deaths and thousands of victims lost their homes
    after the disaster. Several comunities
disappeared due to the floods and more than
250,000 persons were sent to shelters. Also there
were reported damages in Puebla, Hidalgo y
Guerrero and there were thousands of people
    affected.

Hurricane Dean Wednesday, august 22th, 2007
  • 113 municipalities of the state were warned about
the possibility of intense rains on the North,
Northeast and Sierra Negra, as the area of the
Valley of Puebla. This were a consequence of
Hurricane Dean, that since dawn caused the first
rains over different areas of the state,
including the capital, the afternoon of that
Tuesday, was marked by an exceptional storm that
left five people injured and some fallen trees.

Invasion from the sea
  • According to the document Vulnerabilidad del
litoral a los efectos por ascenso del nivel del
mar en las costas Bajas del Golfo de México, the
46.2 of the mexican gulf coast is susceptible
to the increase of the level of the sea.. The
majority of this part is found from the center
towards the south of the coast. Some of the zones
more vulnerable are the coast lakes and the
marsh. Other important areas are the fields and
agricultural lands, which also are polluted with
the salt intrusion and are changing for cost
environments. This units are also distributed in
the central portion and south of the Mexican Gulf
    Coast.

Invasion from the sea
16
Tornadoes caused by the Gulf of Mexico
17
Tornadoes
  • The change of the environment is provoking also
the frequent appearance of tornadoes in the
Southeast of the United States, caused by the
increase of the elevation of the temperature of
    the Mexican Gulf waters.

18
Droughts
  • A phenomenon called desertification is affecting
The mexican grounds seriously. There are more
than 57,660,000 square miles damaged and more
than 47 of our national territory suffers some
    degree of deforestation.The Instituto Nacional
de Ecología, said in México between the 50 and
70 of Mexican territory, approximately, has some
type of drought. The desertification is taking
place mainly in the municipalities of the north
and center of the country. The most affected
states are Durango, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Hidalgo,
    Tlaxcala, Puebla and Zacatecas.

Droughts
20
Lack of water
  • The river basin Lerma-Chapala-Santiago has
suffered an approximated decrease of 61 of its
water drainage and 99.7 of the water reservoir.
However, the usable water volume increased in
    142. This variations show the large exploitation
that has been practiced in the water reservoir of
the river baisin of the Lerma to support the
population centers established on it, and on the
    city of México.

Agriculture Corn
  • The report Comportamiento en la superficie
potencialmente apta para el cultivo de maíz de
temporal ante un cambio climático global , talks
about the impact over the main crop of the
country and it includes that in the present
circumstance the 10.69 of all the country
surface can be considered as apt for corn
cultivation. Meanwhile, the circumstances of the
change showed that just the 4.34 of the
territory will be apt. Before a similar scene, a
diminution of more than 50 of the apt land for
corn cultivation, it would be necessary to add
the increase of the population for the next
century, for drawing a more complete picture, it
  • means, less supply and more demand
  • for food.

23
And what do the rich think about that?
  • The transnational oil companies, the car
manufacturers, the oil chemistry companies and
other industries conformed around oil, coal and
gas are fighting to avoid any international
agreement that jeopardize their interests, if
they stablish obligatory reductions in the
    emissions of (CO2).

24
The government
  • The Secretaría de Medio Ambiente y Recursos
Naturales recognized in a newspaper called El
Universal that they are designing a comunication
strategy where the Mexican Government will
encourage the Mexican citizens to do concrete
things that contribute to the disminution of the
    weather change.
  • For example , to disconnect home appliances when
they arent being used or change the normal light
bulbs to light bulbs that save energy.

25
All the problems presented here were and are a
Mexican responsability and some of us are working
to find out effective solutions
