How to Build a Dream Team? (Continued)
  • Form Virtual Learning Teams (VLTs) of 6 -7
    people.
  • Virtual Learning teams do two case openings
    together and Lessons Learned for last day of
    class
  • Each VLT splits up to do a the final
  • Two teams of 3-4 to do two field projects
  • One team of 3-4 to do project. One team of 2 or 3
    to do a final case exam
  • Three teams of 2 or three that all do case exam.
  • We recommend that you do a final project.
    Learning is much better. But some people cannot
    do a final project and that is fine too.

Options for Projects
  • A GEM Pre-Approved Project
  • Your own venture (e.g., Spread e- Love)
  • Write a Case and Teaching Note for Cases on Chasm
    Crossing Around the World see TomK.
  • DDART a case final exam in teams of 2 or 3.

Choosing the Project
  • Bid on your top 2 choices. Email
    dongdong_at_stanford.edu and sponsors as soon as you
    know your top 2.
  • You have to sell your project team!
  • Deadline to email top 2 sponsors and
    dongdong_at_stanford.edu is Mon. April 7, 7 AM.
  • Sponsors must accept or decline email offers
    ASAP.
  • If a sponsor declines your offer, make an offer
    to another project sponsor. Check the GEM
    website to see which projects are still open.
  • If your 1 choice accepts your offer, accept
    immediately, inform the other sponsor and
    dongdong_at_stanford.edu
  • If two sponsors accept your offer, you must
    accept one, decline other ASAP. CC

Choosing the Project (continued)
  • When you accept a project, email sponsor and
    dongdong_at_stanford.edu your team name, names,
    email addresses, and cell phone s of all team
    members, and request for first meeting to define
    project scope.
  • 9. If your VLT cannot find an acceptable
    project for your team, you have three options
  • Write a case and Teaching note. See Tomk for
    options
  • Do a case DDART in teams of 2 or 3.
  • Find another project. Tom Kosnik has lots of
    options
  • 10. If your VLT prefers to do case exam, email
    dongdong_at_stanford.edu by 7 PM Monday April 7th.
    You will find out which case later in April.

Project Evaluation
  • 40 of Grade.
  • Project sponsor and one GEM Teaching team member
    will evaluate. Using scale below
  • F D C B- B B A- A
  • Final grade simple average of the 2 grades.
  • Final project evaluation template is on GEM web
    in GEM 08 SPR Kickoff email to project sponsors.
  • Final projects must be submitted to sponsors and
    GEM teaching team not later than 5 PM Friday,
    June 6th, 2008.
  • Schedule final project presentations between May
    30th and June 6th.

Case Exams
  • If you do a case exam option, you will be
    assigned one of two cases that are still in the
    pipeline.
  • The cases for the final will be 2 of the 3 below
  • DFJ Vina Capital, A VC firm in Vietnam, that is
    marketing itself to investors and entrepreneurs
    it wants to fund. (Case is in final revision)
  • Case on Energy Crossroads Global. Started at
    Stanford in March 2007, spread to Denmark
    Sweden (August 2007), Singapore (October 2007),
    Uganda (December 2007), China is in the works
    (evolving since July of 2007), and ??? (Case in
    First Draft)

Case Exam Evaluation
  • 40 of Grade.
  • One GEM Teaching team member will evaluate, Using
    scale below.
  • F D C B- B B A- A
  • Detailed instructions and case options will be
    distributed not later than late February.
  • The evaluator for each case will be identified at
    time case options are offered.
  • A customized version of the DDART template used
    for openings will be used to grade the finals
    and will not be shown in advance.
  • The final case DDART is a 7-slide Powerpoint,
    with excel worksheets, not to exceed 20
    pages/slides/excel sheet pages in total.
  • Case DDARTS will be open book, open notes, but
    unlike case openings, you may do background
    research on the Internet and in libraries., You
    may not contact the companies in the case.
  • Case DDARTS must be submitted to the GEM teaching
    team not later than 500 PM Friday, June 6, 2008.

What If Things Go Wrong?
  • Teaching team can appoint mediator
  • Clients can fire teams
  • Teams can fire members
  • Teams cannot fire clients!
  • Report Violations of Stanford Honor code by
    clients or team mates to the Teaching team member
    who is evaluating your project

The 2 Minute Pitches
  • 2 minutes per pitch
  • No questions
  • Tom K will keep time
  • Then teams send reps to talk to the company
    sponsor.
  • We close this room at 830 PM
