4Europe in a global environment
- Turbulence, uncertainty, risk but also
opportunities are globally increasing - Organisations and individuals are intertwining
and evolving into adaptive networks - Work is becoming self-organised, ad-hoc,
connected and international - Knowledge and intangible assets are becoming
major sources of value creation and innovation - Next generation ICTs are becoming visible
Ambient, intelligent, interoperable, mobile,
invisible - Society and economy are asking for trust,
sustainability, social responsibility, and new
governance models - Europes target by 2010 to become the most
competitive and dynamic knowledge-based economy
in the world (European Council, Lisbon 2000)
5The Opportunities
- Opportunity for Europe to take the lead Best
positioned due to - synergetic advantage from diversity and
integration - thought leadership in intangibles and
intellectual capital - shared cultural belief in social capital and
social responsibility - equal consideration of organisations, people and
technology - A critical mass is available
- An existing pan-European community as a living
example for the new type of a Network of
Excellence - 5000 members ready to be activated with
passion and commitment - Admired and observed by the world, connected to
global thought leaders - Research needs are defined
- A sophisticated research agenda based on a 2
year-long deliberation process - Research in smart organisations and knowledge
management is converging towards new forms of
value creation in a networked society - The research community is ready to integrate
between disciplines and between industry and
academia
6The Vision
To make Europe lead the way in research on the
Networked Knowledge Economy ...
... and thus to create sustainable economic
growth with more and better jobs and greater
social cohesion.
7Mission Statement
- To strengthen scientific and technological
excellence in research on the Networked Knowledge
Economy by integrating the research capacities of
individuals and organisations in a European
research landscape. - This is with the intention to advance the way
research is carried out in Europe with respect to
speed, quality, costs, innovation and impact, to
overcome the fragmentation of the European
Research Area and to provide a major contribution
to the strategic goal set by the European Council
in Lisbon for Europe to become the most
competitive and dynamic knowledge-based economy
in the world by 2010.

9Roadmap for Integration
- Integrating the European research capacities is a
stepwise change process that leads towards a
coordination of the research activities in Europe
and a new way of working and interacting for
European researchers.
10The Power of Integration
- Integration cannot be reduced to a pure
re-structuring of resources, but must actively
seek - to connect people
- to integrate academic research and industrial
initiatives - to integrate across disciplines
- to integrate both social and economic priorities
- to integrate classical scientific research with
out-of-the-box thinking - to connect with every other network of relevance
- ...while equally exploiting the powers of
- diversity and redundancy for risk management and
- disruption and competition for innovation

12The Values
- to be open, transparent, excellent
- to capitalise on centres of expertise
- to integrate and enhance smart relationships
- to act as a living system
13Funding
- EC funding targeted at overcoming the barriers to
durable integration - i.e. not for doing the actual research you must
have this already - Concept of an incentive in the form of a fixed
grant for integration, which takes into account
- the expected degree of integration in the
network, - the number of researchers proposed for
integration by all participants, - the characteristics of the field of research
concerned, - and the Joint Programme of Activites (JPA)
- Payment on basis of progress towards integration
- no integration ? no payment
- In KA budget allocated in three areas (say 1/3
for each area) - Assigned budget
- 1. Integration office, management, marketing, RTD
facilitation, IT infrastructure - Dynamic budget
- 2. Reserved budget for members, paid on JPA
and/or proposal and delivery - 3. Open budget for mini-tenders, paid on proposal
and delivery
14What is in it for me?
- Building relationships with leading individuals
and organisations in the research community - Developing myself and receiving stimulation in a
group of excellence - Sharing experiences and thinking with the cutting
edge of research - Having better access to research facilities,
platforms and knowledge - Ensuring the uniqueness of my research activities
by coordination with peers - Taking a position in the European research
landscape and being visible - Driving the European research agenda for the
Networked Knowledge Economy - Gaining fun, self-fulfilment, innovation and
energy to create new and exciting ideas
15What is in it for Europe?
- A super developed community of researchers and
industry - Concentrated and visible competencies in a
virtual place - Interdisciplinary innovation and joint research
agendas - Open transfer and spreading of knowledge
- Less duplication of effort, time and wastage of
money spent - Advancement in research on the Networked
Knowledge Economy and a significant step towards
the Lisbon goal
16What if Europe does not do this?
- Europe builds yet another
- 34 KM frameworks and implementation approaches
- 47 mobile IT infrastructures for networked
organisations - 126 scientific definitions for XY
- Disciplines remain in their silos
- Research continues throwing their findings over
the wall - Industry looses competitive potential
- Research ideas stumble behind industrial practice
and research lead times remain too long - European and national efforts are duplicated
17Who can participate?
- The KA network is
- Open to new members
- Applicants must show excellence in the area of
the network - This is defined not only by proven record of
research and reputation, but also and equally by
connectivity, active participation, commitment to
integration, commitment to KA values, and more - Formal membership is limited to organisations
(due to EC rules)
The Knowledge Angels Network of Excellence is
open to interact and share its results and
knowledge with the whole of Europe. This includes
both individuals and organisations.
18Situation How to participate?

20Frequently Asked Questions
- Is this a KM project?
- No Knowledge Angels is converging from two
areas KM and networked organisations We have
two beliefs - 1. The future of value creation in Europe is
based on knowledge and intangibles. - 2. Value will be created by networked individuals
and organisations. - Can I get my research funded by the network?
- Not really - the focus of the network is in the
integration of the existing and future research
activities of the participating organisations,
not on the funding of actual research work. (The
network will also provide some seed funding for
innovative ideas, but this is only a minor
element and in principle we assume that you do
have already research activities running)
