Title: Notes on the Elements of Design
1Notes on the Elements of Design
- Mrs. Spexarth
- Interior Design
2Elements of Design the concrete, quantifiable
components of any design. -They embody the
principles of design and transform theory into
reality. -Elements of design can be evaluated
according to the principles of design.
3Space Open and closed areas. -There are two
different types of space. 1. Space may be
positive (filled) 2. Space may be negative
(open)
4Example of Space (positive)
5Example of Space (negative)
6Shape two-dimensional outline, often seen as a
geometric figure such as a rectangle or
triangle.Form (an extension of shape) three
dimensional shapes such as cube, cone or
sphere. -for example, furniture seen in
silhouette has shape that can be perceived and as
we move around the furniture, the silhouette
changes and we begin to see the three-dimensional
quality of the form.
7 8 9Mass weight, density, or relative solidity of a
form. -In furniture, mass is the actual density
when the material is filled in, such as a solid
block of wood. -Mass can also be optical density
where the material may not actually be solid.
10Example of Mass
11Line connection between two points. -Lines may
be 1. Straight (horizontal or vertical)
2. Angular (diagonal or zigzag) 3. Curved
(circular, flowing, or tightly curved)

16Texture smoothness or roughness of a
surface. -texture may be read visually or
through touch. -Smooth textures are usually
associated with more formal, high- style
interiors. -Rough textures generally are
thought of as more casual.
17Example of Texture (smooth)

19Pattern arrangements of motifs in a repetitive
order a small pattern may be read as
texture. -Combining patterns patterns are
frequently combined in interior design. To
achieve success four things need to be evaluated
when combining patterns. 1. The placement of
emphasis. 2. The character of the pattern. 3.
The color scheme. 4. The scale of the pattern.

24Light affects the appearance of all other
elements. -Natural light is the most desired
although it can be expensive. -Artificial light
is necessary to make up for unavailability of
natural light. -Combination of both is most
common scenario.
25Example of Light (natural)

27Color hues that may vary from light to dark and
from intense to dull and can be mixed with one
another and combined in color schemes. -color is
the most personal and emotional of the elements
of design. (this is why trends in color change
with seasons, personalities, culture)
28- -Colors continued-
- -Hues or colors that you see on the basic color
wheel. ROYGBIV - -Values the relative lightness or darkness of
the hues. pink-red-burgundy - -Intensity the brightness versus the dullness of
a hue. Intensity can be altered by adding white,
grey or black to a hue.
