What does God ask of us?
  • John 6 - 28Then they asked him, "What must we do
to do the works God requires?"
  •     29Jesus answered, "The work of God is this
to believe in the one he has sent."
  • To believe in Jesus
  • But arent there many faiths that claim to
    believe in Jesus?

4
Which Faith?
  • All these believe in Jesus, so how do we know
    which to follow?
  • What does Jesus say we should do?

5
Which Faith?
  • Mark 16 15He (Jesus) said to them (the
disciples), "Go into all the world and preach the
good news to all creation. 16Whoever believes and
is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not
    believe will be condemned.
  • James 4 11Brothers, do not slander one another.
Anyone who speaks against his brother or judges
him speaks against the law and judges it. When
you judge the law, you are not keeping it, but
sitting in judgment on it. 12There is only one
Lawgiver and Judge, the one who is able to save
and destroy. But youwho are you to judge your
    neighbor?

6
Faith
  • Whilst we shouldnt judge others for their
faiths, we must be sure of our faith.
  • Mar 1052 Jesus said to him, "Go, your faith has
healed you." Immediately he regained his sight
and followed him on the road.

7
Faith
  • John 9 13They brought to the Pharisees the man
who had been blind. 14Now the day on which Jesus
had made the mud and opened the man's eyes was a
Sabbath. 15Therefore the Pharisees also asked him
how he had received his sight. "He put mud on my
eyes," the man replied, "and I washed, and now I
    see."
  •     16Some of the Pharisees said, "This man is
not from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath."
But others asked, "How can a sinner do
such miraculous signs?" So they were divided.
  •     17Finally they turned again to the blind man,
"What have you to say about him? It was your eyes
he opened."       The man replied, "He is a
    prophet."
  •     18The Jews still did not believe that he had
been blind and had received his sight until they
    sent for the man's parents.
  • The Pharisees were the blind ones

8
Faith
  • The Pharisees had no faith in Jesus, and what he
    did.
  • What should we have faith in?
  • Hebrews 11 6And without faith it is impossible
to please God, because anyone who comes to him
must believe that he exists and that he rewards
    those who earnestly seek him.

9
Baptism
  • John 14 6Jesus answered, "I am the way and the
truth and the life. No one comes to the Father
    except through me.
  • How can we go through Jesus to get to the Father?
  • Through baptism
  • Romans 6

10
Romans 6 - Baptism
  • v2 don't you know that all of us who were
baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his
    death?

11
The New Life
  • Baptism, whilst allowing us access to Gods grace
and the hope of eternal life, comes with a
    responsibility
  • We must live as though we are new bodies
  • We must continually repent (Greek to reconsider)
  • We must obey Jesus teaching John 14 21Whoever
has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who
loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my
Father, and I too will love him and show myself
    to him.

12
Obedience
  • Recap - Jesus sacrifice
  • Recap - Salvation
  • Recap - Obedience in baptism

13
Recap - Jesus sacrifice
  • Jesus sacrifice was more than the cross
  • We know that Jesus was born with the desires that
    we have
  • we have one who has been tempted in every way,
just as we areyet was without sin
  • The wilderness temptations
  • The devil?

14
Recap - Jesus sacrifice
  • So what did Jesus sacrifice?
  • His desires
  • His ambitions
  • His career
  • His life
  • Jesus was the perfect example of how obedience
    should come after faith

15
Recap - Salvation
  • If, then, Jesus accomplished eternal life through
his life of sacrifice, how can we benefit?
  • Matthew 1128"Come to me, all you who are weary
and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29Take my
yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle
and humble in heart, and you will find rest for
your souls. 30For my yoke is easy and my burden
    is light."

16
Recap - Salvation
  • How can Jesus bear our burdens?
  • What are our burdens?
  • Aside from the day to day burdens and trials of
life, our greatest burden is sin and death
  • Jesus says that if we come to him he will give us
    rest, eternal rest
  • 1Corinthians 1555"Where, O death, is your
victory?       Where, O death, is your sting?
56The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin
is the law. 57But thanks be to God! He gives us
the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

17
Recap - Salvation
  • As well as casting our burdens on Jesus, remember
he also said Take my yoke upon you and learn
    from me
  • So as well as putting our burdens on Jesus
shoulders, we must take something of him on ours
  • Hebrews 5 9once made perfect, he became the
source of eternal salvation for all who obey him

18
Recap - Salvation
  • What did Jesus say that we must obey?
  • Dont be anxious for your life
  • Believe that Gods will will be done
  • Do to others as you would have them do to you,
    especially with regard to judgement
  • Believe and be baptised to show others of your
    commitment to God

19

A life of living sacrifice
  • Romans 121Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in
view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as
living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to Godthis
is your spiritual act of worship. 2Do not conform
any longer to the pattern of this world, but be
transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then
you will be able to test and approve what God's
will ishis good, pleasing and perfect will.
  •     3For by the grace given me I say to every one
of you Do not think of yourself more highly than
you ought, but rather think of yourself with
sober judgment, in accordance with the measure of
    faith God has given you.
