Title: Procedures in Our Classroom

1
Procedures in Our Classroom
  • 8th Grade Advanced Science
  • Physics
  • Science Research

2
WHY DO WE HAVE PROCEDURES?
  • A procedure is the way that we do things. To do
things right, we have to follow some simple
    procedures, for example
  • To open your gym locker, you have to select your
combination as directed by the lock
    manufacturer.
  • To place a call on your cell phone, you need to
dial the number in the right order.
  • Similarly, to be successful in learning, you need
    to follow some simple procedures.

3
  • EXPECTATIONS
  • When the bell rings, be in your seat working on
    bell work.
  • Be Prepared (bring all materials to class
    everyday)
  • Be Respectful (raise your hand, stay seated, be
courteous to others and their property)
  • Follow Directions
  • Obey ALL school rules
  • CONSEQUENCES
  • Verbal warning
  • Phone call and/or email home
  • Detention with 24-hour notice
  • Referral

4
MUSIC
  • Every day there will be music playing at the
beginning of class. When the music stops, then
you know it is time to be quiet and pay
    attention.
  • Mrs. Fay will usually pick the music, although
there will be opportunities to earn the privilege
    of choosing the music.
  • Any proposed music must be school appropriate. If
the music has lyrics, you must provide either a
hard copy or URL to the lyrics. You will also
need to bring the music (on CD or USB drive) in
    on the day of class.
  • If you forget to bring the music or do not
provide Mrs. Fay the lyrics 24-hours prior to
your music day, then you forfeit your opportunity.

5
ENTRANCE
  • Make sure you have all necessary materials for
the class. If you need to borrow materials, do so
quickly and be sure to return them before
    dismissal.
  • The materials were all donated. If they all
disappear, then we will no longer have materials
    to share.
  • Glance at the days agenda, pick up your bell
work folder, pick up your textbook and other
materials (if necessary), and return to your
desk. You must be in your desk before the bell.
  • Do not run, push, or shove in order to get to
    your seat on time.

6
BELL WORK
  • Immediately start the bell work that will be
    written on the board.
  • Do the bell work in your journal.
  • When you finish, review any returned papers, or
work on the Brain Tease n Freeze.
  • Once the music stops, you should return to your
seat, stop talking, and give me your undivided
    attention.

7
BRAIN TEASE N FREEZE
  • Brain Teases are beginner to intermediate
questions, puzzles, and activities. You can win
    candy for correct brain teases.
  • Brain Freezes are intermediate to advanced
questions, puzzles, and activities. You can win a
music selection for correct brain freezes.
  • Brain Teases and Freezes, including the current
due date and previous winners, will be posted on
    the front board.
  • You may need to use the science readings at the
front table, advanced science textbook, physics
textbook, or online references to solve the
    teases and freezes.
  • Brain Tease-n-Freeze is usually an individual
activity. Please include your ID, and for
    math-related problems show your work.

8
WHEN YOU ARE TARDY
  • If you are not in your seat when the bell rings,
    then you are tardy.
  • Go to Attendance to get your tardy pass.
  • When you get to class, put your tardy pass in the
INBOX, and go to your seat quickly and quietly
after getting your bell work folder.
  • You will not be excused from any work you missed.

9
ID NUMBER
  • Your ID should be in the top right corner of
every paper that you hand in.
  • Using this ID makes it easier and quicker for me,
which means we have more time for fun science
    projects and labs.

10
DURING INSTRUCTION
  • Listen to the speaker with full attention and
    respect.
  • When it is not your turn to talk, do not talk or
    whisper.
  • If your pencil breaks, you may only sharpen your
pencil with a non-electric pencil sharpener.
  • Ask permission to speak by raising your hand.

11
WHILE YOU ARE WORKING
  • Respect each other and be friendly.
  • Use your time wisely.
  • Put forth your best effort to finish your work on
    time.
  • Make sure you read or listen to the directions.
  • If you dont understand, ask help from other
students sitting at your table. If they also
dont understand, raise your hand to ask for
help. Do not ask for help from another group.
  • If you are asked to help, be polite and kind and
offer your best. Talking to each other should be
no louder than a whisper. Any student working on
the other side of the room should not be
    interrupted by your noise.

12
PASSES
  • If you need to use the restroom, you must use
your own planner. Fill out the pass in PEN, and
    raise your hand.
  • If you need to go to the clinic, raise your hand.
Once you fill out the clinic pass, I will initial
it and let you go to the clinic.
  • If you finish early, you may be able to go to the
Media Center to check out materials but not to
surf the web. If you abuse this privilege, you
    will lose it.
  • Please do not ask for a pass during instruction
or labs unless it is an emergency.

13
WHEN I RAISE MY HAND
  • Stop whatever you are doing at that moment.
  • Face the teacher and wait silently.
  • Notify any classmates who havent noticed that I
    have raised my hand.
  • No talking or whispering. Please give me your
    complete and undivided attention.

14
AFTER YOU ARE DONE
  • Check your work and the directions one more time
to see if you missed anything or did something
    incorrectly.
  • If the assignment is to be turned by the end of
the class period, turn it in when you are done.
If it is due in the future, put it in your
notebook for safekeeping. I will not accept
papers early, or more than one day late.
  • Try the brain tease n freeze, work on other
homework or projects, or read quietly. Do not
    disturb other students.

15
DISMISSAL
  • Clean your work area, recycle any white paper
trash, and take all garbage to the trash can.
  • Return your bell work folder to the class filing
area. Do not take your bell work folder home.
  • Wait for me to dismiss you. The ring of the bell
    does not dismiss you.
  • After you get permission to leave, push in your
chair and leave quietly. If it is the last period
of the day, you will put your chairs on your
    table before leaving.

16
ASSIGNMENTS
  • Turn in assignments to the silver INBOX next to
the bell work before the music stops at the
beginning of class or the assignment is late.
  • I will accept assignments one day late for one
letter grade lower. After one day NO CREDIT WILL
    BE GIVEN.

17
WHEN YOU ARE ABSENT
  • Get the assignments from your classmates, the
class website, or myself at the appropriate time.
  • Any hand outs you missed will be in your bell
    work folder.
  • You are responsible for bell work on days that
    you are absent.
  • Do the work at home or in class after you finish
    the current days assignment.
  • If you missed a test because of your excused
absence, it is your responsibility to schedule a
time to make up the test.
  • You will not be able to make up any work if you
have an unexcused absence. You will get a 0
    for those assignments.

18
Course Website Email
  • Use the course website to keep track of
    assignments, projects, and upcoming activities.
  • If you lose your assignment sheet, you must print
    another from the website.
  • Please include your ID in the subject line of
    your email.
  • I will respond to your email within three school
    days.
