Alsace
  • Wines from this region are white wines that are
    characterized as dry and sweet
  • The grapes that are used to make the wine in this
    region are grown exclusively in Alsace.
  • Riesling wine is a favorite of the Alsace wines
    and considered to be the most elegant.
  • Other varieties include Gewurztraminer, Pinot
    blanc, Tokay Pinot Gris, Sylyaner, and Crémant
    dAlsace
  • Wines in the Alsace region are named for the
    grape that produced the wine rather than village
    that in which the wine is made

Bordeaux
  • Wines from this region are well known and
    responsible for producing one-third of Frances
    high quality wine
  • Typically the red wines are full-bodied with
    distinctively smoky flavor accompanied by strong
    violet overtones.
  • The white wines are also full-bodied and crisp
    with a richness and intensity that is grows with
    time as the wines are oak-aged for several years.

Champagne
  • Wines from this region are among the most well
    known and are commonly consumed during
    festivities.
  • Chardonnay is a well known production of this
    region and neither a red, or white wine that are
    most common in France. Rather it is a green-gold
    color and has a refined crisp flavor.
  • Pinot Noir is pale gold color tinged with pink
    with a well rounded fruity flavor.

Burgundy (Bourgogne)
  • Red wines from this region are likely have a
    subtle flavor and are velvety and smooth. They
    are produced from Pinot Noir grapes
  • The white wines often have a more sensual
    characteristic and are produced from Chardonnay
    grapes.
  • A variety of wines are produced from Burgundy due
    to the various types of soil in the many areas of
    this region

Côtes du Rhône
  • This region contributes a very diverse selection
    of wines.
  • You can find a wide selection of full-bodied red
    wines in Côte Rôtie area
  • In the southern part of the region lighter fruity
    red wines are common.
  • Another type of wine that you are likely to come
    across in this region are the full-bodied and dry
    white wines

Languedoc-Roussillon
  • A large part of production from this area are red
    wines that are considered "Vin de Pays" as well
    as a fair share of "Vin de Table"
  • This region is known for producing more wine than
    any other area in the world.

Loire Valley
  • This region is know for its white wines which
    make up 75 of the production of Loire Valley
    Wine.
  • Chenin Blanc and Sauvignon grapes are often used
    to make wine in this region, while Chardonnay is
    not consider a grape to be commonly used.
  • The red wines that can be found in this region
    have a fruity flavor.

Provence
  • This is one of the few regions in France that
    specialize in rosé wines.
  • Well known wines of this region are rosé wines
    that have a light and fruity taste
  • Provence also offers red wines that have a full
    bodied taste and white wines that are known to be
    aromatic

Corsica
  • Another region that is known for high quality
    rosé wines.
  • Also offered are dry white wines
  • Wines from this region are best when not age for
    long periods of time
  • It is best to drink these wines as an aperitif or
    along with a light meal.

  • The history and traditions of this region have
    brought about high quality wines.
  • For a full- bodied red wine one should try a well
    aged Madrian
  • IF a sweet white wine is desired one should try
    Monbazillac

History of Wine Making In France
  • Wine making in French history dates back to pre-
    Roman times
  • During the Middle ages wine making was not a
    common practice and for the most part wine making
    was left to Monks.
  • Later Nobility began to own vineyards and make
    their own wine.
  • Wine making became more widespread and commercial
    after the French Revolution and Napoleons
    secularization of the vineyards.

The Importance of Wine In French Culture
  • Wine is a valued part of French cuisine and is
    more commonly served with meals than we are
    accustomed to in the U.S.
  • Wine also has an important role in French
    holidays and celebrations.
  • Dionysus, The Olympian God of wine has influenced
    French artist and has been portrayed in many
    works of Art
