Fermentation of a Sugar Solution
The final mixture will be concentrated, and its
proof number determined by a graphical method.

Obtain the following apparatus

• Be sure the rubber stopper fits the Erlenmeyer
  flask and the cork stopper fits the test tube.

Make ONE (only ONE) file mark when cutting glass
tubing!

• Fire polish the ragged ends to avoid nasty cuts!

When boring cork stoppers, go half way through
from one end.

• Complete by boring from the other end. With
  luck, the holes will meet.

The amounts need not be so precise!

• We are not concerned about the percent yield!

Anyone can comfortably hold up to 50 degrees in
his bare hands.

Swirl the flask over the flame.

• Every few seconds, feel the bottom of the flask
  to test the temperature of the contents.

Add barium hydroxide solution to a bit over half
full.

• The mineral oil is to keep the aqueous solution
  from evaporating while you are away on semester
  break.

Label the set-up with your names and place it on
the shelves reserved for your section.

• In a few days, you may want to check to see if
  any barium carbonate has collected in the test
  tube.
