AWAL
2
  • During this AWAL experience, we have all
learned a lot about responsibility and
leadership. Our first stop was KVHS (the Work
Room) where Mrs. OConnor explained our agenda
for the day. After a nice welcoming snack, we
made our way to the Global Television Network.
This is where we met the news supervisor, Kevin
Babin and an employee Eugene Boles. They both
were very interesting individuals. They explained
how it was working at broadcasting network.
After our interview we returned to the Work Room
and discussed what we learned and what essential
skills were the most valuable for each different
    career.

3
Essential Skills
  • In the business industry, these 9 essential
skills are used in every day life and will help
bring you success in your future career(s). It is
important to learn them early on in life to learn
their value and to apply them in your work.
  • The essential skills are
  • Reading Text
  • Thinking Skills
  • Computer Use
  • Oral Communication
  • Continuous Learning
  • Working With Others
  • Writing Skills
  • Document Use
  • Numeracy

4
Reading Text
  • In the television broadcasting/advertising
business, reading text is a principal factor. On
the job, reading text can be interpreted in many
ways such as reading of scripts and
tele-prompting for the news cast to inform the
viewers of breaking news and important
information. The employees require this ability
to communicate to each other through memos, fax,
e-mail, etc. If the employees didnt have this
ability, the company would not be very strong.

5
Thinking Skills
  • Thinking skills are vitally important at a
broadcasting network like Global. The workers
think on the spot and make critical decisions
every night before airing on live television.
These employees also need the ability to think
    for themselves and think fast.

6
Computer Use
  • In the 21st century, computers and electronics
are virtually everywhere. At Global, computers
were used in offices, editing rooms and almost
everywhere else you could imagine in the
business. Advanced editing software is used to
record, edit and broadcast footage. In office
use, employees and secretaries use computers for
accounting, communicating and research. Most of
what you see on Global TV has been processed,
    edited and/or recorded by computers.

7
Continuous Learning
  • The employees working at the Global Broadcasting
Network are learning continuously every day.
Whether its learning how to use new equipment,
computers or the proper way to do a traffic
report. If you ever think about working in the
broadcasting business you should make sure you
are open to learning new things. The workers are
also often required to teach their fellow
co-workers how to use the latest equipment.

8
Working With Others
  • Working with others is a key aspect in television
networking, considering one may have over eleven
co-workers. When new equipment arrives only one
employee is taught how to use it . Afterwards,
they must show their co-workers all that they
have learned. This skill is also required when
organizing information, writing and even editing
scripts. Working with others is a great way to
    accomplish things faster.

9
Document Use
  • Document use is also a very important essential
skill at Global T.V. They count on it in several
ways. Such as reading information and
interpreting facts. It is important because in
several jobs you must create your own documents
based on certain information. You must also be
able to display that critical information quickly
    and as neatly as possible.

10
Oral Communication
  • The employees at the Global Television Network in
Saint John use oral communication every second of
every day. It is very important because without
interacting with one another they wouldnt be
able to inform the viewers of emergencies,
instruct, reassure or discuss changes. At Global,
oral communication is a critical requirement, as
it is in most aspects of their work.

11
Numeracy
  • There are many uses of your basic math skills in
the broadcasting industry. Many of the people who
operate the Global Television Network use their
math skills every day. Whether its calculating
money, budgeting, calculating pay checks or
numerical estimation, they all use it. So before
applying to a job in the broadcasting business
make sure you know all your basic math skills
because you wont always have a calculator beside
    you.

12
Writing Skills
  • At Global Television Networking, writing skills
are extremely important and are considered very
valuable. When writing scripts, one is required
to organize all the information specifically
and accurately. If otherwise, one could lose
credibility of the viewers. Aside of reports,
there are memos to be left for other staff
members. It is required that one is precise and
factual. Clearly, writing skills are a much
    needed factor at Global.
