What Jews knew about the
Spirit of God

• The Spirit of God was involved in the miracle of
  creation
• And the earth was formless and void, and
  darkness was over the surface of the deep and
  the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of
  the waters. (Genesis 12)

What Jews knew about the
Spirit of God

• The Spirit of God had come upon Israels leaders
  to endow them for their special work, often
  accompanied by prophecy.
• The seventy that helped Moses judge Israel
  (Numbers 1125)
• The judges of whom it was said, the Spirit of
  the Lord came upon them (Judg. 146)
• King Saul (1 Sam. 106) and King David (1 Sam.
  1613) when they were anointed

• The Spirit of God had come upon Gods prophets
• David The Spirit of the Lord spoke by me, And
  His word was on my tongue (2 Samuel 232).
• Balaam in Numbers 242
• And testified against them by Your Spirit in
  Your prophets (Neh. 930).

The pouring out of the Spirit

• The time at which the Spirit would begin His
  works tied to salvation is called the pouring
  out of the Spirit.
• We will look at promises God made about the
  pouring out of the Spirit in order to know
• when the pouring out would occur
• who it would benefit
• what difference it would make

• Old Testament

Promises in Isaiah

• Isaiah 329-18
• Judah is now extremely corrupt and evil.
• Verses 9-14 are part of a longer passage (most of
  Chapters 31 and 32) which tells of the
  punishments God will bring down upon them if they
  do not repent.
• In verses 15-18 God also reminds them that He
  will again bless them after they repent.
• The blessing after their repentance is called the
  pouring out of the Spirit

Promises in Isaiah

• Isaiah 441-5
• Isa. 44 is in the middle of a section about the
  coming Savior - My Servant (Isa. 42-53)
• I will pour out water on the thirsty land (v3)
• I will pour out My Spirit on your offspring
  (v3)
• And My blessing on your descendants (v3)
• Pouring out the Spirit is the same as pouring out
  Gods blessings
• And this pouring out is tied to the coming of
  the Savior

Promises in Ezekiel

• Ezekiel 3925-29
• Ezekiel wrote after the people had been taken
  into slavery as Isaiah had prophesied.
• Ezekiel is referring to the time when Israel will
  repent and turn back to God.
• Then God will bless them.
• I will have poured out My Spirit upon them

Promises in Joel

• Joel 228-32
• Referring to the time when God will bless the
  nation (after punishment repentance).
• The blessings to the nation are concluded in
  227. Beginning in 228, God explains how His
  blessings upon the nation of Israel will result
  in blessings upon all people.

• God will pour out His Spirit on all mankind
• As a sign, people will again prophesy, have
  prophetic dreams and have visions from God
• No indication how long the sign would last
• From that time forward whoever calls on the name
  of the Lord will be saved
• Pouring out of the Spirit a blessing for all
  mankind (cf. Gen 121-3). (The blessing is the
  opportunity to be saved!)

• Showing grace (Gods blessings) and supplication
  (a time when man can approach God through prayer)
• Comes when they can look upon God whom they had
  pierced
• Comes with a conviction of sin

• One that would bring salvation to all who call
  upon the name of the Lord
• John foretold and Jesus promised a baptism with
  the Spirit, which would be administered directly
  by Jesus
