What is the Safety Groups Program
  • Voluntary, continuous improvement program and
    rewards firms that implement effective Health and
    Safety and Return to Work measures into their
    daily business
  • Firms across Ontario from similar or different
    rate groups meet and network with a collective
    purpose to learn and gain from each others
    experience in implementing injury and illness
    prevention programs.

Program Eligibility
  • Commitment from Owner or Senior Management to
    participate
  • Be committed to creating or enhancing the safety
    culture in your workplace
  • Be a Schedule 1 Firm
  • Be in good standing with the WSIB
  • Be committed in participating in the program for
    at least one full calendar year
  • Participate in only one safety group at a time
  • Not be a member of the Safe Communities Incentive
    Program (SCIP)

Program Requirements
  • Attendance at a minimum of 3 group meetings per
    year (sign-in required firms must attend full
    length of meeting unless prior arrangements have
    been made in advance with your Sponsor, OSP)
  • Complete baseline and year-end assessments of
    your firms health and safety program strengths
    and weaknesses (will not affect status in
    program, only to assist you in the selection of
    your elements)
  • Develop and implement an Action Plan of health
    and safety elements
  • Keep your Sponsor (OSP) informed of your progress
    and ask for help when needed
  • Submit a year-end achievement report documenting
    your accomplishments for the year
  • Participate in WSIB Validation Audit Process if
    required

Program Overview
  • Each firm works on five health and safety
    elements throughout the year.
  • Members are required to select one element from
    the Return to Work category, one element under
    the Leadership category and one Group element
    (chosen by consensus)
  • The remaining elements are selected from the
    other available categories (Organization, Hazard
    Recognition Assessment and Control Activities)
  • The WSIB provides firms with an extensive list to
    choose from for example, First Aid, JHSC,
    Workplace Inspections, Accident Investigations

  • Within one year, a firm must implement all five
    elements utilizing the WSIB core model, 5-Steps
    for Managing Health and Safety
  • 1. Set Standards - create policies/procedures
  • 2. Communicate - to everyone (all employees)
  • 3. Training - for those applicable
  • 4. Evaluate - is it working???
  • 5. Acknowledge Success and/or Make Improvements
    - continuous improvement

Our Program, Our Success!

    construction, etc.
  • Ontario Safety Partners is a high performance,
    full service safety group that experienced in
    2004 a 29 reduction in lost time injuries, 35
    increase in accident prevention and in the first
    year operating, experienced a 99.5 achievement
    rating.
  • To date, OSP Members have received over half a
    Million Dollars in financial rebates

Correlation between Workwell SG Program
  • The Workwell Program Safety Groups Program are
    guided by the same principals and use an
    identical 5 Step Model Approach for building
    maintaining a sustainable health safety program

Correlation between Workwell SG Program
  • The 4 health safety core areas are managed
    using the 5 steps
  • Each year, members will work on 5 health safety
    elements under the 4 core areas using the 5 step
    approach
  • The safety group element requirement/criteria
    listing was developed after the Workwell program.
    Through safety groups, firms will also be
    fulfilling Workwell requirements.

    Sponsors????
  • Our group is member driven! We are the only
    sponsor that conducts member visits year-round to
    provide program assistance and recommendations
    for your HS program over and above safety
    groups.
  • We also attend all WSIB Sponsor meetings on
    behalf of our members and prepare firms for, and
    attend the spot-check process with our members
    (10 of group randomly selected)
