- HIV/AIDS THREATENS THE SOCIO-ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
OF INDIVIDUALS, COMMUNITIES AND THE COUNTRY AT
LARGE. - AIDS IS A DESTABILIZING FORCE IN ALL SECTORS.

- THE EPIDEMIC IS AFFECTING A WIDE CROSS-SECTION OF
SOCIETY CHILDREN, THE YOUTH, ADULTS MEN AND
WOMEN. - HIV/AIDS IS A MULTI-DIMENSIONAL PROBLEM.

- 1.5 MILLION OF KENYANS HAVE DIED OF AIDS.
- 1.8 MILLION ARE LEFT ORPHANS.
- THE CUMULATIVE NUMBER OF DEATHS MAY RISE TO 2.6
MILLION BY END OF 2005.

- Most AIDS deaths occur between ages of 25-35
years. - The economic loss per day is estimated to be
about Kshs. 200 million. - Life expectancy in the country has dropped from
60 years in 1993 to about 47 years 2003 due to
HIV/AIDS.

- Reduction of labor supply
- Reduction in productivity

- Subsequent change of land use pattern

- Decline in nutritional health status among

- Failure to pay for immediate health needs

EFFORTS, WHICH ARE NATIONAL AND MULTI-SECTORAL
INVOLVING ALL STAKEHOLDERS - THE GOVERNEMENT OF KENYA IS COMMITTED TO THE
THREE ONES AS PRACTICAL APPROACH FOR NATIONAL
RESPONSE, i.e.

- Though inter-sectoral coordination
- The establishment of AIDS Control Units (ACUs)
in all the line Ministries - Consultation and dialogue with all stakeholders
- Funding Community Initiatives according to
Priority Areas
22PROGRESS MADE IN VARIOUS PRIORITY AREAS
- To be discussed under various technical groups
but the major ones do include - Notable decline in HIV/AIDS prevalence from 14
in 2000 to 7 in 2004 - Notable political commitment at all levels
- Increased resources allocated to HIV/AIDS
activities - Increased involvement of all sectors in the fight
against HIV/AIDS
23RESOURCE MOBILIZATION
- In order to address the national response, there
is need to address the availability of adequate
resources financing mechanisms. - National Resource Envelope survey done in 2002
and 2004 have indicated that there is a large
resource gap amounting toKShs 5.8 Billion. - The tables below show total funding and
expenditures as part of the national response
