2AMDAR Activities in China
- Activities from 2007
- Work together with Airlines to turn on AMDAR
downlink - Problems
- AMDAR tests and trials
- Activities right now
- Expand meteorological information source from
downlink messages - Enhance AMDAR messages processing system on ground
3Activities from 2007
4AMDAR Activities from 2007
- Work with Airlines to open AMDAR downlink
- Establish and improve AMDAR QC system
- Problems
- Test and trials
5AMDAR Activities from 2007
- Work with Airlines to open AMDAR downlink
- Air China 12B737NG(WOB)
- China Southern Airlines 12B737NG(WOB),4B757(WXR
) - Shanghai Airlines 18B737NG(WXM)
- Shandong Airlines 6B737NG(WOB)
6Establish and improve AMDAR QC System
- Establish and improve AMDAR QC system
- Monitoring all downlinks including meteorological
elements, filtering abnormal element and downlink
message - Logging all abnormal downlinks and recording
problems in meteorological observations - Generating AMDAR QC reports
7Establish and improve AMDAR QC System
MET and 4D elements
IT system in MET office

Raw messages
Data processing
Flight phase
MET elements

- The Architecture of AMDAR QC system
8AMDAR Activities from 2007
- Problems
- Because of the cost, Airlines intend to reduce
the traffic of AMDAR downlinks - Airlines suggest to reduce or eliminate dedicate
AMDAR format downlink, or increase intervals of
observation points - Airlines request to promote latitude and
longitude precise of AMDAR downlinks to support
flight tracking

For latitude and longitude element, the precision
is not good enough for flight tracking, and
Airlines cannot improve them easily
10AMDAR Activities from 2007
- Tests and trials Air China conducted tests of
using Current Position Report to replace some of
AMDAR WOB reports, because - AMDAR downlinks cannot turn off/on and cannot
change intervals of observation points during
flight - AMDAR WOB reports generate data link traffic cost
outside China - Latitude and longitude precise of AMDAR downlinks
cannot support flight tracking requirements
Solution AirChina request to reduce AMDAR WOB
and replace it with density increased position
report including meteorological elements
11AMDAR Activities from 2007
- Tests and trials
- Problem when using position report
- Some types of aircraft cannot get certain
elements required by AMDAR, such as TAT,flight
phase (PF) - Statistic
- 30,000 observation points per day
- 7,000 messages lack of certain elements

16AMDAR Activities from 2007
- Tests and Trials DFD report
- 4D position information collected from engine
report (DFD), together with MET element, can work
as AMDAR data source - SRS for DFD are required (work with airlines)
- Recognizable DFD formats includesTKO,CRZ,TUR
- Quality is good, but number is limited
17AMDAR Activities from 2007
- Tests and Trials
- Problems when using DFD reports
- Flight phases defined in AMDAR reference manual
are different from SRS of engine report. Data
adaptation is required. - Problems exist in system integration level
because message formats are different from
aircraft types. - Statistic
- 800 reports per day
- 800 observation points

21AMDAR Activities Right Now
- Expand data source of Meteorological information
from downlink messages - ADCC is working on using position reports as
AMDAR sources - Air China has applied new position report format,
including MET elements, and tested on B737NG and
A320 aircraft - Air China also planed to increase numbers of
aircraft using new format position report to
80-100 aircraft
22AMDAR Activities Right Now
- Expand MET information source from downlink
messages - ADCC is working on using engine reports as AMDAR
sources - Air China, Shenzhen Airlines, Sichuan Airlines
have provided B737 and A320 DFD SRS - DFD report of more than 300 aircraft have been
obtained
23AMDAR Activities Right Now
- Enhance AMDAR messages processing and QC system
on ground - Enhance recognition and QC capability of position
