2Program Requirements
- Education Requirement
- Subject Area
- Legislation stipulates applicants for subject
areas must hold a bachelors degree or higher
from an accredited institution. - Vocational/Technical
- Applicants must have the equivalent of one year
of college with six years of experience to
qualify to apply for entry to Troops to Teachers.
3Financial Aid
- A stipend of not more than 5,000 is authorized
to assist in attaining teacher certification. - A 10,000 Bonus is authorized for participants
who teach in a high needs school. - Maximum amount an individual receives cannot
exceed 10,000 .
4Obligations Incurred
- Those participants that accept any financial aid
have committed themselves to teach at least three
years. - If they accept the bonus of 10,000 they must
teach in a high needs school for three years. - Certain drilling reservist categories require a 3
year enlistment or extension.
5Active Duty Eligibility Categories Bonus and
Stipend Eligible Categories AD-1. Retired
Active Duty on or after 1 October 1999.
Individuals must apply within 4 years from
separation. AD-2. Active duty member with
approved date of voluntary retirement with one
year or less. AD-3. Individuals retired or
separated for physical disability, after 8
January 2002. Individuals must apply within 4
years from separation. AD-4. Individual
involuntary discharged from active duty from 1
October 1990 through 30 September 1999 due to a
Reduction In Force (RIF) and had 6 or more years
of continuous active duty. May apply up to 30
September 2003. AD-5. Active duty members that
applied for and satisfied the eligibility
criteria for the original Troops to Teachers
program before its repeal on 5 October 1999.
6Reserve Components Eligibility Categories Bonus
and Stipend Eligible Categories RC-1.
Individuals retiring from the drilling reserves
with 20 or more years of service after 1 October
1999. Individuals must apply within 4 years from
separation. RC-2. Individuals currently serving
in the drilling reserve components on or after 8
January 2002 with over 10 years of total service
and commit to serving an additional 3
years. RC-3. Individuals in the drilling
reserves who have been retired or separated due
to a physical disability on or after 8 January
2002. Individuals must apply within 4 years from
separation. RC-4. Individuals transitioning
from active duty on or after 8 January 2002, have
served 6 years immediately before separation and
commit to 3 years with a drilling reserve
component. Individuals must apply within 4 years
from separation.
